The Washington Post suspends reporter David Weigel over sexist retweet

Source: CNN

The Washington Post has suspended reporter David Weigel for one month without pay for retweeting a sexist joke, two people familiar with the matter told CNN on Monday.

Weigel did not respond to a request for comment, but an out-of-office reply from his Post email address said that he would return to work on July 5. Weigel apologized publicly last week for the retweet, saying he "did not mean to cause any harm."

A spokesperson for The Post declined to comment, citing a need for privacy regarding personnel matters.

Weigel retweeted a joke saying that all women are bipolar. (In fact, 2.9% of men and 2.8% are diagnosed with the condition).
This perpetuates the sexiest notion that women are emotionally unstable hysterical creatures.

I know one thing. I don't see women shooting up schools.

His defenders say "it was just a joke". But by that logic, a racist joke would be acceptable because it was a joke.

No.

A man scorned is more accurate. How many women and children have died because he didn’t want her to leave?

And to avoid dangerous areas, going somewhere in groups is safer.

Areas with groups of men are considered dangerous.

Most women understand the safety issues and teach their daughters to be careful.

I wonder if this planet will ever be safe for women and children?

While I don't have male privilege, or safety from men, I do have white privilege. As an older, white female, if the police stop me, I am most likely not going to be killed or jailed.

Old while lady. I met a state trooper socially once and asked him what I should do to reassure any officer who pulled me over that I was no kind of threat. I thought he'd say something like "keep your hands visible." Instead, he told me no one would think I was a threat. No cop is going to think his/her life is in danger and kill me.

for how they'll look if families have to identify them covered in blood?

Come on, you guys. If we always keep one foot at least tethered to the ground, we won't float away in our bubbles along with the Qers and trumpists.

According to Statista, as of beginning of June 2022, out of 330 MILLION Americans, 427 civilians were shot dead by police, including ALL interactions, such bank robberies and domestic shootings. The rate of black police shooting deaths is more than 2.5 x that of white deaths. A current figure 39 black police shooting deaths per million Americans, from ALL interactions. Last I read elsewhere, AA at 13.3% of the population were @2.5 times as likely per capita to be killed by police as whites. Other increased rates for other groups, including Hispanics.

We know this includes many people dying because they were black, too many completely innocent. Nevertheless, likely none of the deaths so far this year were black grandmas whose hopes of once again living to get home from shopping turned out be in vain.

Not vitriol or hate or intimidation. Ill timed? Maybe. Roll your eyes at it and keep it moving. Bombs are detonating in Ukraine hospitals and a mean tweet put one of the nation's premier newsrooms into a tailspin?!?
