Former President Donald Trump knew his supporters were armed with weapons during the Jan 6, 2021, Capitol attack, but insisted they be allowed to watch him speak before the riot.
I dont f-ing care that they have weapons, Trump said, according to testimony from a former top White House aide. Theyre not here to hurt me. Take the f-ing mags [metal detectors] away. Let my people in.
The new explosive testimony came from former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson during a surprise hearing on Tuesday. Hutchinson recalled that Trump had been informed by Secret Service that his supporters had brought weapons to his rally shortly before the attack on the Capitol. Those weapons included bear spray, spears, guns and flagpoles used as weapons.
Trump, however, was apparently fixated on the crowd size and demanded more of his supporters be allowed to bypass metal detectors to watch him speak, Hutchinson testified.

Trumps ego was all that mattered. Trump did not care if others--Congresscritters may get hurt. Only he mattered and his crowd size!!

(523 posts)From CNN:
Cassidy Hutchinson testified during the hearing that she was told that former President Donald Trump became "irate" when informed by security that he would not be going to the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, because the situation was not secure.
And she testified that she heard a secondhand account of how Trump was so enraged at his Secret Service detail for blocking him from going to the Capitol that he lunged to the front of his presidential limo and tried to turn the wheel.

President Trump lunged at a Secret Service agent, putting his hand on the mans throat after he was told he would not be taken to the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, according to testimony by former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson.

(15,273 posts)Carol Leoning, who recently wrote a book about the Secret Service, was on the MSNBC post-game show. She said that both Ornato and Engel are well-know to be major Trumpers which diminishes their credibility. It also explains why Liz Cheney specifically asked Hutchinson if Engel was in the room during the recounting of what happened in the car, if Engel objected to the account and if either Engel or Ornato ever told her the story was untrue. Ornato actually left the Secret Service to work directly for Trump in the WH.
Both men gave depositions to the committee, but were not under oath although both said they'd deny the story under oath.

(15,273 posts)1 - Trump was mad the crowd wasn't filling the space and that's why he wanted the security searches stopped. Trump just wanted a big crowd. If disarming the crowd would've achieved it, that's what he would've asked for instead.
2 - Trump knew some in the crowd were armed but that was to use their weapons against others, not him.
But 1 and 2 aren't related.
