Justice Dept. investigating Trump's actions in Jan. 6 criminal probe

Source: Washington Post

The Justice Department is investigating President Donald Trump’s actions as part of its criminal probe of efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, according to four people familiar with the matter.

Prosecutors who are questioning witnesses before a grand jury — including two top aides to Vice President Mike Pence — have asked in recent days about conversations with Trump, his lawyers, and others in his inner circle who sought to substitute Trump allies for certified electors from some states Joe Biden won, according to two people familiar with the matter. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

The prosecutors have asked hours of detailed questions about meetings Trump led in December 2020 and January 2021; his pressure campaign on Pence to overturn the election; and what instructions Trump gave his lawyers and advisers about fake electors and sending electors back to the states, the people said. Some of the questions focused directly on the extent of Trump’s involvement in the fake-elector effort led by his outside lawyers, including John Eastman and Rudy Giuliani, these people said.

In addition, Justice Department investigators in April received phone records of key officials and aides in the Trump administration, including his former chief of staff, Mark Meadows, according to two people familiar with the matter. That effort is another indicator of how expansive the Jan. 6 probe had become, well before the high-profile, televised House hearings in June and July on the subject.

And I was also heartened to hear that the J6 Committee was now only on a "summer break" and would continue in September "with public hearings" (at least according to a CBS radio report I heard a couple days ago). I think the original expectation was that the last prime-time hearing would have been the "final one" before the report but obviously "the dam has burst" so we have to "stay tuned"! In fact, I think CBS even called it an ultimate "cliff-hanger".

Justice Dept. Asking Witnesses About Trump in Its Jan. 6 Investigation

By Maggie Haberman and Glenn Thrush
July 26, 2022, 9:55 p.m. ET

Federal prosecutors have directly asked witnesses in recent days about former President Donald J. Trump’s involvement in efforts to reverse his election loss, a person familiar with the testimony said on Tuesday, suggesting that the Justice Department’s criminal investigation has moved into a more aggressive and politically fraught phase.

Mr. Trump’s personal role in elements of the push to overturn his loss in 2020 to Joseph R. Biden Jr. has long been established, both through his public actions and statements and evidence gathered by the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack. But the Justice Department has been largely silent about how and even whether it would weigh pursuing potential charges against Mr. Trump, and reluctant even to concede that his role was discussed in senior leadership meetings at the department.

Asking questions about Mr. Trump in connection with the electors plot or the attack on the Capitol does not mean the Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into him, a decision that would have immense political and legal ramifications.

The department’s investigation into a central element of the push to keep Mr. Trump in office — the plan to name slates of electors pledged to Mr. Trump in battleground states won by Mr. Biden — now appears to be accelerating as prosecutors with the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington ask witnesses about Mr. Trump and members of his inner circle, including the White House chief of staff, Mark Meadows, the person familiar with the testimony said.

He's being investigated? Why has he not been indicted?

He's been indicted? Why is he not in jail?

He's in jail? What about all the other crimes he got a free pass on?

Nothing will ever be good enough because then some folks would have to admit they were 100% wrong all along.

DOJ has been investigating Trump at least from last April. Claire McCaskill is pleasantly surprised, she should also apologize.

DOJ has Mark Meadow's phone records from April, that means that DOJ is going after Trump. I said when DOJ investigates Meadows DOJ is investigating Trump.

DOJ can indict Meadows or flip Meadows, or both. Donald Trump better hurry up and announce he is running for president, but alas, I think he's too late.

I sincerely apologize for doubting Merrick Garland, he runs a tight ship, the Meadow's investigation did not leak.

Go get em Merrick, and go get em Fani. Trump can be indicted by both state and federal prosecutors.

Look, the thing is we've all felt like a proverbial Charlie Brown with Lucy and the football before.

This one is bigger than anything previous and truly a fight for our democracy. Of course our tensions are going to be escalating. We've all been through some serious crap no one ever could have imagined happening the way it did. Yet it did, and easily could again, as we now know. I'm hopeful our AG is going to also recognize the code red level we're on and make it obvious a second coup attempt will not be tolerated. This is new territory, toxic territory of new levels never seen before.

We all needed some good news to either assuage our concerns or at least make us shake our shoulders out a touch. We all needed a moment to breathe.

I called for investigations. What this does is send a message to Magats in the states that DOJ means business, beyond the mob that stormed the Capitol.

This was sorely needed for them to hear that DOJ is investigating Trump.

Merrick Garland may eventually decide not to indict Trump, and that is fine with me, he will know what's best.

I worry about my state, Pa., Mastriano is on the ballot, investigations of him need to be done quickly. A couple of big donors are pouring millions of dollars into Mastriano's campaign.

What I really want for Christmas, though, is seditious conspiracy. That's the one with the max 20 year prison sentence.

But, I'll happily take 3 to 5 years for the fake elector scheme.
