Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner: arrest after attempted shooting of Argentina vice-president

Source: The Guardian

A man has been detained after he aimed a handgun at point-blank range at Argentina’s vice-president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, in what the president said was an attempt on her life.
...
The incident, in which Fernández de Kirchner appeared unharmed, took place as she was greeting supporters outside her home in the Buenos Aires neighbourhood of Recoleta at 9pm on Thursday.

“A man pointed a firearm at her head and pulled the trigger,” the president said in a national broadcast. “Cristina is still alive because, for some reason yet to be confirmed, the gun ... did not fire.”
...
The Argentinian newspaper Clarín reported that a 35-year-old Brazilian man had been arrested at the scene.

Freeland ambush highlights growing threats to women in Canadian public life

Justin Trudeau has warned of an increasingly toxic atmosphere in Canadian public life, amplified by the anonymity of social media and disproportionately targeting women and visible minorities in politics and journalism.

*snip*

“Threats, violence, intimidation of any kind, are always unacceptable, and this kind of cowardly behaviour threatens and undermines our democracy, and our values and openness and respect, upon which Canada was built,” Trudeau said on Monday.

Freeland’s condemnation of the incident in Alberta has prompted other women to share their experiences of misogyny and racism while serving in public office.

There's other information in a Latin America forum thread by peppertree, which uses information from Argentina which says the would-be assassin wears a tattoo which identifies him as a neo-Nazi. Figures. He's Brazilian, like Bolsonaro.

Let's just say she saw that thing aimed at her head and heard the click when the asshole pulled the trigger.

It will be vaguely interesting to know what kind of grudge he held. My leap of illogic says it's likely related to the conviction and imprisonment of 600 people involved in Argentina's "Dirty War." Or he could just be driven mad by misogyny.
