Doug Mastriano says he's not extreme. So why do many say he is?

Source: Yahoo via AOL

Doug Mastriano is irate that he is being called an extremist.

“I’m really sick and tired of it,” the Republican nominee for Pennsylvania governor said in an interview last week with conservative comedian and pundit Ben Stein.

With two months until voters go to the polls, Mastriano — a 54-year-old state senator from southern Pennsylvania — is trailing state Attorney General Josh Shapiro by 7 points in the FiveThirtyEight polling average. Mastriano has fallen behind over the past month as it came to light that he had a relationship with the social media website Gab, an online incubator of antisemitism and bigotry.

I'd suspect he was lying. Ignore what they say and watch what they do. Wearing a confederate uniform for a class picture tells you all you need to know about this person. And don't forget he was a big participant in the "Stop the Steal" rally.

And to be fair to him, he's not alone. You can't visit the Gettysburg area without seeing Confederate symbols all over the place. People have been asked to take them down but most argue the "history" angle. Which is pure BS; 33,000 Pennsylvanians died in the Civil War. Confederate dead on the battlefield were not buried with any honors or recognition. The farmers whose fields Confederate dead were hastily buried gave people in the south an ultimatum; come back and take out your dead or we'll dig up their bones and grind them up and reapply them on our fields. Union soldiers initially preserved the battlefield, put their unit markers up and held annual get togethers to mark the battle's anniversary. They NEVER allowed a Confederate to come to their gatherings or put up a unit marker. (All of those were put up after the National Park Service took over maintenance, and the daughters of the Confederacy white-washed the whole war). And because of the glorification of the Confederate cause, I personally do not like visiting Gettysburg.

listens to talk radio and if a few hundred bigoted insecure assholes on 1500 radio stations can shout the same ignorant bigoted extremist bullshit and lies all day to 50 mil a week, endorsed by hundreds of school and pro sports teams and local and national companies, and no one complains, why wouldn't a pack of ignorant extremist bigots try to piggyback that buzz to political stardom? plenty have the last 30 years.

The dude with the prop and the flight helmet, I don't know. Behind him, in the black jacket and tan uniform, that's a Navy dude. The two in tan shirts/olive green trousers are Marines, and the dude in the blue uni is Air Force. As for the other civvies, I don't know who or what they are but there are a lot of civilian instructors there.

North of the M-D was designated anti-slavery (Union) and south of the M-D line was pro-slavery (Confederate.) Historians will note that West Virginia didn't exist before 1861, because the state wasn't formed until after the northwestern counties of Virginia broke away during the Confederacy. West Virginia was not a slave state even though it sits to the south of the Mason-Dixon line.

My point is that there were a few people living in southern Pennsylvania who were slave-owners before 1776. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution changed all that, of course. But people's opinions and prejudices are sometimes slow to change.

Mastriano represents one of those areas.
