PHOENIX (AP) Arizona Democrats vowed Saturday to fight for womens rights after a court reinstated a law first enacted during the Civil War that bans abortion in nearly all circumstances, looking to capitalize on an issue they hope will have a major impact on the midterm elections.
Republican candidates were silent a day after the ruling, which said the state can prosecute doctors and others who assist with an abortion unless its necessary to save the mothers life. Kari Lake, the GOP candidate for governor, and Blake Masters, the Senate candidate, did not comment.
Katie Hobbs and Kris Mayes, the Democratic nominees for governor and attorney general, implored women not to sit on the sidelines this year, saying the ruling sets them back more than a century to an era when only men had the right to vote.
We cannot let (Lake) hold public office and have the power to enact extreme anti-choice policies that shes spent her entire campaign touting, Hobbs said during a news conference outside the attorney generals office. As Arizonas governor I will do everything in my power and use every tool at my disposal to restore abortion rights in Arizona.

(3,479 posts)Laws like this are our greatest ally, in our desire for a huge Dem majority and permanent right to choose laws on the books nationwide. These people are politically stupid, which is our greatest asset.

(8,954 posts)forced-birth GOP candidates, having made unforced errors of miscalculation will have two choices:
Don't respond and allow themselves to stand as proponents of the 1864 ban, OR get defensive about their unabashed support, also displaying their true colors. Of course, a third choice would be to disavow the law and stand with the majority of citizens, who were opposed to the nullification of Roe. Not likely.

(110,900 posts)and Mormon women are still expected to produce huge families, like they are still on the frontier and need help on the ranch.
Don't expect overwhelming support to repeal that law from them.

(10,072 posts)Despite these laws, women can still get abortions. Unfortunately, most of those ways require money.
So, all they are doing is forcing pregnant children, the weakest among us and the poorest of the poor from getting an abortion.
Laws are made to be broken, for those with some wealth. Just ask TFG.

(31 posts)when a court ruling declares that a law is "unconstitutional". Readers Digest used to put out articles all the time that would list state and local laws that are still on the books that seem even more ridiculous by today's standards than when they were written. Usually, it's a moot point to legislate their removal...and very time consuming.
