Apple to make iPhone14 in India

Source: Times of India

India is set to manufacture Apple’s flagship iPhone 14 smartphones with the company confirming that the devices would be made in India at contract-manufacturer Foxconn’s factory in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. This would perhaps be the quickest scale-up that Apple has initiated in its India manufacturing setup with the latest iPhone being made here within weeks of its global unveiling that happened on September 7. When contacted, the company confirmed the development. “The new iPhone 14 line-up introduces ground-breaking technologies and important safety capabilities. We’re excited to be manufacturing the device in India,” Apple told TOI in a statement.

Sources said that the India-made devices would not only be sold within the country, but also exported to global markets. However, manufacturing in India will not mean lower prices for the devices. Apple currently has its top 3 global manufacturing partners making smartphones in India. These are Wistron, Foxconn, and Pegatron The company started manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017 with the iPhoneSE. Currently, Apple also makes the iPhone SE, iPhone 12, and iPhone 13 in India. All the three players enjoy manufacturing benefits provided as part of the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.

The growing engagement in India comes at a time when the company is understood to be looking outside China for strong manufacturing operations. China accounts for the majority of production for the company and it is estimated that Apple sources as much as 95% of its goods from the Dragon Land. The Indian government is understood to have asked the American electronics giant to generate annual production output worth $50 billion within the country in 5-6 years and expand its locally-made product kitty beyond iPhones to include Macbooks, iPads, Air Pods and watches.

They worse than suck. Never again! I even wrote that in red Sharpie on the back of the tablet so that whoever gets it after I die will understand not to put too much faith into this worthless device.

6. Great more overseas manufacturung

I guess the whole idea of manufacturing anything here other than car floor mats is dead. We count on foreign nations to accumulate the raw materials ( because we basically stockpile none). They have a trained workforce that can assemble and manufacture the parts of these complicated electronics ( we have people trained to pour coffee with flavorings). We send them all our design blueprints and technical data so they know exactly how to manufacture them ( so we give away our technical knowledge that took years to develop). We have sales people here who will be able to show you how to take great selfies and little else. All because we refuse to pay our workers or develop a manufacturing sector that can do it all here. That's why we have the dumbest population on earth that spends 80% of their time on screens wondering how they look and what everybody else is looking at. American's self indulgent brainless planet killers.

13. Samsung Doesn't Make Much In South Korea Anymore...
Mon Sep 26, 2022, 01:21 PM
Sep 2022

A lot of Samsung’s production is outsourced to China, Vietnam and elsewhere, depending on the product. For example, their flatscreens, which go into Apple’s iPhones (and I think, some Macs) and their own TVs, are made in China. Their phones are made in Vietnam and India. I suspect their appliances are made outside of South Korea, as well. I haven’t looked that up.

That being said, due to the unreliability of China’s production capacity of late, increased IP theft (sponsored by the Chinese Communist Party), and increasing hostility between the governing CCP and the West - which Apple and other MFGs get caught in the middle of - many MFGs like Apple are looking to move as much production as possible out of China.

15. Now I understand the push reported in our local paper for RDU to initiate direct flights to India
Mon Sep 26, 2022, 02:08 PM
Sep 2022

Apple is building a multi billion $$ campus 10 minutes from the RDU airport here in the Triangle (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill). This morning there was a report in the local paper about a meeting that was held with airport officials asking for a new direct flight from here to India. Yes, there is a large Indian community in the Triangle, but not nearly enough to fill direct daily flights. There was no mention of the Apple connection. The local airport officials wanted to offer better one stop connections rather than direct flights.

It will be interesting to see how this develops.

17. Global businesses are diversifying production away from China

The Chinese govt is becoming too untenable to do business with. The Hong Kong crackdown, the Uyghur genocide, Taiwan, etc. Hard to maintain a good corporate image and do business in China.
