Biden brings Thanksgiving pies to Nantucket first responders

NANTUCKET, Mass. (AP) President Joe Biden on Thursday delivered at least half a dozen pumpkin pies to Massachusetts firefighters during a Thanksgiving Day show of appreciation and his toddler grandson walked away with a red fire hat topping his blond curls.
Oh wow, Biden was heard to say upon seeing Beau Biden, who is nearly 3, emerge from the headquarters building wearing the hat. The president was with the firefighters who had lined up outside the building to welcome him.
Biden had expressed appreciation for firefighters and other emergency personnel earlier in the day when he and his wife, Jill, spoke by telephone to the hosts of NBCs broadcast of the Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.
I want to say thanks to the firefighters and police officers, first responders. They never take a break, he said during the call. The Bidens spoke later Thursday with units from each of the six branches of the U.S. military, stationed in Europe, at sea, at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, the White House said.

What would such an individual want to post here for, unless it was an attempt to stir up trouble?
Good riddance. Probably just as well.

(10,901 posts)below the post to "show post" or something like that. Anyway very "out there". There were also jury alerts and how the jury voted and comments by jurors if the juror left a comment, that one could see by just clicking another link.
That all went away after a particularly bitter primary (mid 2016) because this spawned long long subthreads and even complete new threads commenting on jury decisions and the background of the person with the hidden post and what they posted on Facebook or Daily Kos that was racist or anti-semitic or whatever and contradicted something they were saying here and so on, which generated discussions on other thread participants' hypocrisy and whatever else (jurors and alerters remained anonymous, so their ancestry etc. was fortunately not part of the discussions). Some people got tired of this, in particular the people whose opinions defacto and dejure matter the most .
Edit: from above "and how the jury voted and comments by jurors if the juror left a comment, that one could see by just clicking another link."
For the sake of accuracy, now that I think about it, only jurors and the alerter could see that one (it was DU-mailed to the jurors and alerter), there was no link to that, but sometimes a juror or alerter would post that to the thread.
By the way juries were and are 7 people. (Several years ago, it was 6 people and a 3-3 tie resulted in acquittal)

(15,385 posts)I've always wondered why when I vote on a jury I don't get to see if my vote mattered or not. Perhaps not show the posters, but at least letting us know how the vote went would be nice. Or if one of our posts is hidden, saying something like "Your post was hidden in a jury by a vote of 8-5."

(2,561 posts)They are camping out at a sprawling waterfront compound along Nantucket Harbor owned by David Rubenstein, co-founder of the Carlyle Group, a private equity firm. Biden celebrated Thanksgiving at the home in 2021.
The Bidens have a more than 40-year tradition of spending Thanksgiving on the Massachusetts island.
I don't see a connection anywhere except using the compound and being on the island.

What a shame, some don't/can't appreciate real success and those who contribute to society.
David Mark Rubenstein is an American billionaire businessman. A former government official and lawyer, he is a co-founder and co-chairman of the private equity firm The Carlyle Group, a global private equity investment company based in Washington, D.C.
He is chairman of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, chairman of the National Gallery of Art, chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations, and chairman of The Economic Club of Washington, D.C., and former chairman of the Duke University Board of Trustees, and former chairman of the Smithsonian Institution. In 2022, he became chair of the University of Chicago's Board of Trustees. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Rubenstein

He rode the train with the rest of us commoners and likely wouldn't sic the secret service puppies on someone who wanted to give him kudos.
Perspective: would Donald Doofus Frump ever? Would any Bush? M.O F. most any Republican?

(48,968 posts)need to realize that $30 million in Nantucket does not buy you the level of luxury it would buy elsewhere in the country. That home is luxurious, but a comparable level of luxury in many parts of the country would be about 90% less.

(48,968 posts)and a much larger home.
When DFW was posting about his vacation on Martha's Vineyard last summer, and the subject of the cost of living on Nantucket came up, I decided to google a Nantucket address a former friend of mine had once used as his mailing address. Turned out to be for a 4,000 sq ft place valued at $8 million on Nantucket - overvalued there - that would have been $1 million or, more likely, half a million or less, almost anywhere else in the country. Someone in the Lounge posted an ad recently for a $2 milllion house on Nantucket that was only about 400 square feet, and fairly new, not historic.
People in Nantucket pay for location, and I suppose the relative isolation.
But people who just see the $30 million figure will be imagining some incredibly vast, lavish quasi-palace, maybe with the gold-plated "dictator chic" style that Trump seems to favor. Which is NOT the type of home where the Bidens are celebrating Thanksgiving.

highplainsdem
(48,968 posts)the location. My objection was to the value of the home being mentioned with no explanation of how overpriced Nantucket is, and whether that would leave the impression the Bidens felt they had to stay in a palatial residence. There was no need to mention the value of the home at all.
