Source: CNN

The Foreign Minister of Belarus Vladimir Makei has died at the age of 64, the country’s foreign ministry said Saturday.

“Vladimir Makei, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, has suddenly passed away today,” the Foreign Ministry said in its official Facebook account, without providing more details about the circumstances surrounding the foreign minister’s death.

Makei was born in 1958 in the Belarusian region of Grodno. He had been in the post since August 2012, according to his official bio on the foreign ministry’s website.

Makei was scheduled to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday, according to Russian state media outlet RIA Novosti.

If that were true, it would make sense to eliminate obvious successors who have been insufficiently cooperative in advance to prevent them from getting in the way of whatever puppet figurehead the Kremlin has in mind to replace Lukashenko.

of all of Belarus, surrounding Ukraine again on three sides. I wonder if the average Belarusian would accept the occupation of their country. Would the entire Belarusian army cooperate with the Russians? It could mean civil war in Belarus. Personally, I think if Pooty makes such moves, he will be stepping into a larger hornets nest than he has at present.

question whether Belarusians, including the army, would stand for it. Lukashenko is not exactly universally loved -- he holds onto power by force and corruption. He is a near-total Putin toady, yet withheld his army from Putin so far, likely because he's afraid of it being the last straw.

Have. If Putin does that it will be the same as with russian conscripts- defiance, desertion, surrender. There are already a number of Bellarussians fighting in Ukraine.

As far as just a conspiracy, Poland has been erecting a huge concrete and barb wire border fence along their border with Belarus. Maybe they know something we don’t. You can’t trust anything putin says.

It's risky. The Belarusians don't care for Putin and his imperial war, but it might make a nice consolation prize for him if he can control the country.

Just saying as one possibility. It has seemed to me there is probably a faction in Belarus that would like to ditch Mother Russia.

There are other possibilities too.

and he keeled over from a massive stroke or heart attack. That's actually the most likely scenario.

Or, considering how Belarus has been foot dragging when it comes to supplying their kids as cannon fodder for Russia, it might have been a warning from Uncle Vlad.

It's just one more of those eastern European mysteries we'll never know the answer to.

However, if it was Uncle Vlad, it was an odd choice, you'd think it would be their top military guy.
