(15,364 posts)They should just go into overtime like any other normal sport.

Are you by any chance referring to this?

My point was that nobody would honestly suggest that there should have been overtime when exactly that did happen and when this is normal for football. And btw, I stand corrected on that point, it wasn't a joke.

(15,364 posts)Plus I had meant indefinite overtime, so yeah I did word it horribly. I knew about the overtime rules that are currently in place.

(15,364 posts)Like baseball in extra innings. It's the 13th inning and it's still 3-3? No problem, here comes the 14th inning.

(101,294 posts)Baseball is not a good comparison; people are standing, or sitting, around for a lot of it. American football, ice hockey or basketball are better as comparisons, but there's the question of substitution - available all the time, and reversible, in most American favourite sports.
One possible suggestion I've seen that's better than just "keep going" is "keep going with a golden goal rule, but allow continuous (re)substitution". While the stamina of the best players would still be vital, they'd be able to give people a spell off, and it means the skill of the entire squad is tested. But it is, like penalties, a change from normal football rules.

(15,364 posts)Not sure how often they revise their rules, but it might be worth looking into.

(56 posts)As The Shovel CLEARLY reports:
Seemingly out of the contest until the very last moments, Qatar pulled off a spectacular upset for the ages, with FIFA announcing them winners at the conclusion of the World Cup final. It is the first time a nation has won the trophy without getting past the group stages. A $4 billion payment from the Qatari Government to FIFA was described as totally unrelated.

(30,247 posts)It was one of the best matches of any World Cup final. I'm so happy for the Argentine people and for Messi, since this was probably his last World Cup. He led his team to victory after a disappointing first match with Saudi Arabia.

(21,614 posts)This was a much needed moment of joy for them - plus, politically, it makes a comeback for Trump's pal Macri next year somewhat less likely.
Argentines are still struggling with the 2018 "Macrisis" - a Bush-style debt bubble collapse.
And (on top of that!) the pitiful performance by the soccer team that year, due largely to bossy and incompetent coaching by Macri pal Jorge Sampaoli.
Not surprisingly, some in the country's RW media (every bit as vicious as Farce News) were openly hoping the team would lose - for that very reason: the elections next year.
If you haven't seen it, here's footage of Messi, Coach Lionel Scaloni, and their team arriving in Argentina tonight. Enjoy!
