Biden won't veto Republican-backed bill blocking D.C. crime law changes

Source: MSNBC

WASHINGTON -- President Joe Biden told Senate Democrats at a closed-door lunch meeting on Thursday that he won't veto a measure designed to undo changes to D.C. crime law, four sources with direct knowledge told NBC News.

The House voted last month to pass a resolution that would block revisions to the D.C. criminal code recently approved by the D.C. Council. It is expected to also pass the Senate as early as next week, setting up a question for Biden on whether to sign or veto it.

The measure to overrule the D.C. Council has the support of Republicans and some Democrats. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., has indicated he would support the measure. Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, said he would "probably support" it as well, making it more likely to pass.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer confirmed Thursday after Biden's lunch with Senate Democrats that the president told members he would not veto the bill if it passes.

Then they would have to conform to Maryland state law like any other city has to do in their respective state.

States are compensated for all federal buildings on state property.

The value of the federal buildings in DC is (to say the least) hefty.

But it doesn't mean a guaranteed gain of two Dem senators. It would mean a gain of one or two Dem reps.

4. Mayor Bowser vetoed the DC City Council proposal, but her veto was overturned.

The DC Council reduced criminal penalties for carjacking, robbery and burglary, as well as allowing voting for non citizens. After the Mayor's veto against it was overturned, the US House & Senate had the final say and voted to support Mayor Bowser's veto. That means the existing penalties remain in effect.

for the Repugs to keep unfairly suppressing the black people in DC. They have been targeting these people with their "laws" for over two hundred years now.

Biden rallies Senate Democrats, endorses Republican measure

By MARY CLARE JALONICK and KEVIN FREKING March 2, 2023
...................................

On Wednesday, the Senate voted to overturn a new rule set by the Department of Labor over the way asset managers consider climate change and “environmental, social and governance” factors in investments for retirement plans. It was able to pass with the support of Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Jon Tester of Montana, who are both up for reelection next year.

Biden has said he will veto that and keep the rule in place.

Republicans are forcing the simple-majority votes by using the Congressional Review Act, which allows Congress to overturn certain regulations that have been in place for a short time. Those votes are some of the only policy measures that have been considered this year, as Schumer has put a raft of judicial and executive branch nominations up for votes instead of legislation that has little chance of becoming law.

Democrats have had to hold back on some of the more controversial nominations, as well, as members of the caucus have had extended absences. New Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman is gone for several weeks dealing with clinical depression after he suffered a stroke last year. California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Thursday that she has been hospitalized in San Francisco with a case of shingles. And Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey returned from a short absence this week after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer.
