Sen. Dianne Feinstein hospitalized for shingles

Source: CNN Politics

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the 89-year-old Democrat from California, announced Thursday that she was hospitalized and receiving treatment for shingles, hoping to return to Washington later this month.

Feinstein’s absence could influence Democratic strategy in the chamber as the Democratic Caucus controls the Senate by a 51-49 margin, and Sen. John Fetterman has also been hospitalized since last month for treatment for depression.

“I was diagnosed over the February recess with a case of shingles,” Feinstein said in her statement. “I have been hospitalized and am receiving treatment in San Francisco and expect to make a full recovery. I hope to return to the Senate later this month.”

Feinstein announced earlier this year that she would not seek reelection in 2024.

Friends of mine have had rough times. I know it's unpredictable (and essentially not treatable, I think.)

Dad got it, and that encouraged me to get the shot. I actually got the FIRST one, and the 'new' one when it came out.

I did not notice in the article the text indicating that "despite having had a shingles vaccine shot the Senator is experiencing a particularly virulent episode of shingles."

Does Gov Newsome appoint a replacement? Or would there be an election? Anyone?

Shingles is horrible. I've been lucky enough to avoid it, but I have a few friends that have suffered mightily from it.

Wouldn't even wish it on Ted Cruz. Well....

During the absence of Feinstein and Fetterman, then Biden has to veto it.

I think he should use a pocket veto to drag it out as long as possible. Or veto it the day before a pocket veto would take effect. They delay everything. Biden should too on this.

Although now this bothers me about what they might send on the debt ceiling.

and whether loony House legislation sees the light of day in the Senate at all is still up to Schumer.

Right now, they can still continue without explicit dealing with the debt ceiling until early this summer and remember that for most circumstances, there is a 60-vote cloture requirement in order to advance any legislation that is even allowed to get on the calendar (outside of using the reconciliation tool).

The main thing that cloture does not apply to are the Presidential appointments and that is what should be the main focus that the Senate does at this point - get hearings going and shove as many judges into the system as possible. The other thing will be their acting as a firewall to whatever happens with the Farm Bill that is being drafted to make sure that stuff like SNAP doesn't get gutted.

I had it about 10 years ago. It was scattered over my chest and back. Most of the pain was gone in about a month, but one spot above my heart kept giving an occasional sharp throb of pain for a year.

Since then I've had two vaccinations, the second one a few months ago.

If you wake up one morning and have characteristic "water" blisters of shingles, go immediately to a walk in clinic or urgent care center. DO NOT wait for a Dr appt. The sooner you start on antivirals the better the outcome.

Do not wait!
