Justice Dept. arrests hit 1,000 in connection with Jan. 6, and new accusations surface in latest

Source: CBS News

The Justice Department has reached a milestone in its prosecution of the U.S. Capitol attack, confirming it has arrested at least 1,000 people in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021 assault on the Capitol, nearly half of whom still face the prospect of trials or plea agreements.

A new wave of cases, many of which involve higher-level charges of assaults against police, continues to expand a prosecution that is already the largest in American history.

Twenty-six months into the criminal investigation, the newest cases continue to reveal new details and evidence about alleged criminal activity amid the riotous mob.

Slightly more than half of the men and women charged with federal crimes in the Jan. 6 attack have entered guilty pleas in their cases. But even as cases close, new defendants and charges continue to surface, which could stretch the overall prosecution well into 2024, if not beyond.

Because the case is bigger than two statements. There is much more, but you have to build the case.

Besides, he did not say exactly that. Further, anyone can say "I will march with you to the Capitol" and separately say "We must fight like hell", or even say them together, which he did not. Not every time, but free speech is always the first presumption, ... unless you want to take away American rights. Since it is the first presumption, you don't have a case with two sentences and you can't arrest someone like that.

Because simple solutions like arresting somebody is NO guarantee of a conviction. Arresting a very prominent person before a case has reached certain stages can blow up the case and lose the conviction.

Simplistic goofy actions like arresting the rump in January 2021 might give you a thrill but prosecuting the rump is not for thrills. Prosecuting the rump is serious business.

Because the people running the investigation know a hell of a lot more than I do about such things, and, I expect, a hell of a lot more than you do. They have decades of experience. I have none. Do you?

I do wish people would stop calling for simplistic spasms just so they can scratch an itch.

Far from it. More arrests are expected. Likewise, it absolutely makes sense to expect that, after 1000 arrests, what is left to investigate is the more difficult cases that lead to higher level charges.

You ain't seen nothing yet. Indictments are coming. And I will be the first one to apologize if I am proven wrong.
