Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell remained in the hospital Thursday and was being treated for a concussion following a fall at a Washington, D.C., hotel Wednesday night.
"Leader McConnell tripped at a dinner event Wednesday evening and has been admitted to the hospital and is being treated for a concussion. He is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days of observation and treatment. The Leader is grateful to the medical professionals for their care and to his colleagues for their warm wishes," McConnell's communications director David Popp told ABC News Thursday afternoon.
GOP Sen. John Barrasso, who is also a physician, told reporters McConnell is alert and talking. "He's gonna be observed which is concussion protocol. I expect him to make a full recovery and be back here next week," Barrasso said as he left a meeting where Republican senators were briefed by McConnell's team. The hotel where the fall occurred, sources said, was the Waldorf Astoria, formerly the Trump International Hotel. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Thursday he spoke with McConnell's staff after reaching out to his colleague.
"First, my thoughts this morning are with my good friend, Leader Mitch McConnell, who's recovering from in the hospital after an accident last night," Schumer said in remarks on the Senate floor. "This morning I offer a prayer of strength and healing for the leader and his family. I called the leader this morning and spoke briefly with his staff to extend my prayers and well wishes. My thoughts are also with Leader McConnell's family and his team. I join every single one of my colleagues in wishing Leader McConnell a speedy and full recovery."

(20,868 posts)And yes, I do mean it regardless.
It were those nasty falls that marked the beginning of the end for my late husband. He was 85 years old when he died. The falls began a few years before that.
He died from an awful form of dementia called vascular dementia, a type of dementia I'd never heard of before. You don't last long once they figure out you have this problem, I know that much.
I would not wish this illness on anyone.
I hope that Mr. McConnell improves soon and best wishes to him and his family.
No one needs deserves this, no one.

(259 posts)often the doctors are more concerned about why the older person fell than the actual injury or lack of injury. My husband had a couple of falls without any particular injury but his doctor was more concerned about why he fell. I have seen this with others I know who are older--ie. seventies and eighties. Given his age and health history this is quite serious. I am in no way a fan of McConnell, but I will not gloat over any physical harm.

(46,822 posts)So this is probably not the first time he fell.
As someone who has fallen and been injured, I know why the hospital is keeping him.
He needs a good medical work up to determine why he fell.
Could be any number of reasons.

Ok, hes human, yada, yada, but he has been instrumental in intentionally destroying our democracy for his own benefit.

(2,785 posts)I did a double flip fall while walking up a ramp in my house and broke my hip. Took TWO sets of X-rays, because the ER docs didn't do their jobs correctly and pick it up on THEIR set of x-rays, so I walked around on a broken hip for 2 weeks before seeing my rheumatologist. Why my rheumatologist? Because ER doc chalked it up to "old age and arthritis" (I was on crutches because I couldn't put weight on the hip and leg). Rheumatologist did more x-rays and found the break. He wants CT Scan. No orders have ever been received at the hospital. So far, from what we can find out, they seem to be stuck at the Medicare Advantage insurance stage. So, I still hobble along on a broken hip.
I'm 67, female, trying to heal from a broken hip. This doesn't bode well for the future. It never does for one in my category. The only thing that ensures a worse outcome is if I was in a nursing home. Luckily, I'm in my own home and still married to my hubby of forever, and have friends I can call on when I get desperate.
So, while I'm glad they took such good care of Mitch, it still kinda jacks my jaws the contrast of his care to mine. But then, I'm just a regular old joe... no, check that. I'm just a regular old jane. That's TWO strikes against me.

(14,854 posts)want to try some tai-chi.
It strengthens the body, keeps you limber, and excellent for improving balance.
I learned two forms 10+ years apart in my 30"s and 40's. Did each 5 years seriously then tapered off each about a 2 yr period.
I have notes so I can relearn the 2nd one, though I still do a small portion from time to time. I attribute it to having no chronic aches & pains, and very good balance at almost 70.
Good luck and glad you have husband and friends to help.

(2,785 posts)Was learning it about 10 years ago, and then lost my teacher. A friend of mine, who does yoga, was talking to me not too long ago about trying to learn Tai Chi, and we decided to try to hook up the computer in a compatible room and learn from it and YouTube. We both suffer from fibromyalgia. We figure between Yoga and Tai Chi, as long as we fall against each other, it couldn't hurt! (LOL)
