Manchin calls Biden administration priorities 'absolutely infuriating' after ESG veto

Source: The Hill

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) teed off on President Biden’s decision earlier on Monday to veto a bill that would have nixed a Labor Department rule on environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing.

Manchin, who was one of two Senate Democrats to vote with Republicans to overturn the rule on March 1, called Biden’s decision “absolutely infuriating” in a statement and panned the administration for putting its “radical” and “progressive agenda” ahead of the country’s needs.

“This Administration continues to prioritize their radical policy agenda over the economic, energy and national security needs of our country, and it is absolutely infuriating,” said Manchin, who is up for reelection next year. “West Virginians are under increasing stress as we continue to recover from a once in a generation pandemic, pay the bills amid record inflation, and face the largest land war in Europe since World War II.”

“The Administration’s unrelenting campaign to advance a radical social and environmental agenda is only exacerbating these challenges. This ESG rule will weaken our energy, national and economic security while jeopardizing the hard-earned retirement savings of 150 million West Virginians and Americans,” Manchin continued. “Despite a clear and bipartisan rejection of the rule from Congress, President Biden is choosing to put his Administration’s progressive agenda above the well-being of the American people.”

wielded his obstructionist power as if he was the shadow president...he would agree to a proposal one day and condemn it the next...appeasing Joe Manchin gave him power..will he or won't switch parties..heady stuff...only when he became toxic did he attempt to redeem himself...Manchin wants desperately to be president, positioning himself as a pseudo centrist, Mr. Bipartisan...however, Manchin has become somewhat irrelevant of late, no longer courted and consulted and his immense ego can't handle it...and there's a good possibility he may lose his seat to a Republican challenger so he must prove he is anti-Biden to get re-elected if he chooses to run..

According to his Senate bio, Manchin has 3 children and 10 (!) grandchildren:

This show that they are scared, no, terrified of the the longer term implications.

I'll bet the oil/gas industry has already researched that a.) their share prices will drop b.) ESG will grow by leaps and bounds unless contained now and c.) said ESG leaning firms will reap the benefits with ever increasing share prices, all at the expense of the anti's.

Joe Biden’s first veto takes on Republicans’ war on “woke capitalism”

Biden has officially blocked an anti-ESG resolution pushed by the GOP.
By Li Zhouli@vox.com Mar 20, 2023, 1:35pm EDT

President Joe Biden has officially issued his first veto, blocking a Republican effort to stop retirement fund managers from considering environmental and social concerns — or ESG — in their investments. “There is extensive evidence showing that environmental, social, and governance factors can have a material impact on markets, industries, and businesses,” Biden wrote in a message to the House accompanying his decision.

The veto was inevitable, but changing the rule was never Republicans’ main goal. Instead, they sought to frame this specific approach to investing — and the administration’s support of it — as “woke,” in an attempt to make it the centerpiece of their latest culture war.

(snip)

Below is a list of the issues that Republicans have targeted in this way — and where they stand:

  • ESG rule: Both the House and the Senate have passed a resolution rolling back the Labor Department rule that allows investors overseeing retirement funds to consider ESG factors. One House Democrat — Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) — and two Senate Democrats — Sens. Jon Tester (D-MT) and Joe Manchin (D-WV), both of whom represent battleground states — joined Republicans in supporting the resolution, which Biden is now expected to veto.
