Trump faces more than 30 counts related to business fraud, sources tell CNN

Former President Donald Trump faces more than 30 counts related to business fraud in an indictment from a Manhattan grand jury, according to two sources familiar with the case.
Earlier Thursday, a spokesperson for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said the office has contacted Trump's attorney to "coordinate his surrender" for arraignment on "a Supreme Court indictment, which remains under seal."
"Guidance will be provided when the arraignment date is selected," it added.
Trump will likely appear in court early next week, his defense attorney said.

(26,729 posts)For instance - I heard part of a recording that sounded like Cohen originally proposed paying him back over a series of monthly payments. If that was over three years then each check that was recorded as "legal fees" on the books would be a separate "count" of the same crime.

Trump is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
The indictment has been filed under seal and will be announced in the coming days. The charges are not publicly known at this time.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Braggs office has been investigating the former president in connection with his alleged role in a hush money payment scheme and cover-up involving adult film star Stormy Daniels that dates to the 2016 presidential election. Grand jury proceedings are secret, but a source familiar with the case told CNN that a witness gave about 30 minutes of testimony before it voted to indict Trump.
The decision is sure to send shockwaves across the country, pushing the American political system which has never seen one of its ex-leaders confronted with criminal charges, let alone while running again for president into uncharted waters. Trump released a statement in response to the indictment claiming it was Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history.

(4,741 posts)But isn't their "supreme court" the equivalent of a California Superior court, the place where standard (state-level) crimes are tried?
Always found that "supreme court" title confusing until I remember it's a regular court.

(48,996 posts)Regardless, the magats will scream continually about persecution and it becomes yet another victimhood story.
One of the biggest tropes they employ is like: "It's not him they are after, it's you. He's just in the way." So they can use the charges as part of their own victimhood story. Makes them feel a little bit more important.

(50,555 posts)...that you could get thirty separate business fraud charges out of the Stormy Daniels incident.
Or, to be blunt, ANY.
We've all been talking about Ms. Daniels for quite a while, but wouldn't it just be a hoot and a holler if, when the final indictment documents are released, there wasn't one sex-scandal-related charge in it?

but since I have no way of really knowing, Im just gonna get on with my personal life and try hard not to think about this until Tuesday.
Quite the challenge for me! LOL

(15,278 posts)records of doing the same crime 30 different times. At least that's how I understood the lawyers who were on with O'Donnell last night. But, to make the indictment a felony, there has to be at least 1 charge that's different from the charge of falsifying business records which is a misdemeanor in NY.

(50,555 posts)That makes a lot of sense. This would bring the Trump Foundation into play; he used to have people pay debts they owed him by "making a contribution" to it. That way they could deduct the payment from their taxes as a charitable contribution.
If that's the case, they're going to have to put him in protective custody until trial. Anyone crooked enough to go for a scheme like that is also someone who knows a guy who knows a guy. Those people DO NOT LIKE the idea that they could go to prison too, so there's a nonzero chance that if he's allowed to remain free until trial he'll never go to trial because someone whacked him before his first appearance.

(15,278 posts)there had to be some other charge to raise this from a misdemeanor to a felony. Your scenario is plausible, but I'm not a lawyer.
Trump isn't going to be held in jail no matter how much we might want it.
