Now we know when Steve Bannon will stand trial in the We Build the Wall fraud case

Source: Law and Crime

Former Donald Trump strategist Steve Bannon will stand trial next year for allegedly defrauding donors of a charity initiated to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, a Manhattan judge said on Thursday.

The brief hearing lasted a matter of minutes to schedule important dates on the road to Bannonís trial, slated for May 27, 2024.

Bannon and his former company, We Build the Wall, have been under indictment in New York since February 2022. The six-count indictment accuses Bannon of money laundering, conspiracy and scheme to defraud. He has pleaded not guilty.

4. rump cronies on trial in middle of R primaries. Expect a party-splitting battle royale

DeSantis is betting on the rump sinking under the weight of his crimes around that time. Otherwise he'd wait until 2028, as he would have been wiser to do, to let the rump self-destruct and come in to mop up the pieces and take the R crown.

If you think R and D politics are highly polarized (they are), then you ain't seen nothin' yet till you see the Always-Trumpers go head to head against the Never-Trumpers; the latter group including people who voted twice for him but never again.

The vows to not vote for one or the other in the general election are flying thick.

The Always magats accuse DeSantis of selling out to the GOPelite and being the Deep State candidate for their fear of the rump.

The DeSantis supporters accuse the rump of being unelectable, undisciplined, and failed to "drain the swamp". They highlight the rump's unceasing grievances about 2020. They think the rump is the Deep State's candidate for the R primaries because they are sure Biden can defeat him again.

One take-away: They all use the "Deep State" as an all-purpose bogeyman.

2. Any lawyers out there to comment on why it should be taking so long? One year to the start date?!

8. Not a lawyer, but in the absence of a more informed opinion,

this article might shed some light on the complications that went into the scheduling of this trial:

11. Thanks. That was interesting, about getting an extension during an earlier phase of the proceedings

To review information uncovered. But still not clear why this phase should take so long. Very infuriating....

5. He's only out of jail right now is because

he appealed his CONVICTION for Contempt of Congress (although that sentence was only 4 months).

15. Whinge whinge whinge

The trial was tentatively scheduled for the end of November. Now it's been moved to the end of May next year.

And it takes so long because this isn't the telly. The government had 4TB of evidence against Bannon. The defense lawyer needed time to go through it all. He was given until February to do that, and then the court needed to meet to set the actual trial date, when the judge had an opening on his schedule to make that call. Courts are dealing with more cases than this one, you know, so it took a while. Is everyone else with a case supposed to step aside in getting their justice to make way for this case?

Of course not. You know why? Because neither the world nor the judicial system revolves around what you want.

Deal with it.

17. Sure, let's wait on Trumps next trials till '25. That'll work just fine!

And yes, some cases SHOULD take precedence over others. And they often DO.
With a case like this prosecutors dont NEED to use all the evidence they found. And they only need to turn over what they intend to use unless its exculpatory. Its fraud & money laundering, not murder.
People who advocate the overthrow of our government should see the courtroom a little quicker than the guy dealing 2lbs of weed.
But I guess some folks are fine with letting him slide for a yr+

16. Because he's appealing the decision.

Until the appeals run out, he doesn't go to jail.

This is how the system works when you have the money to appeal.

Keep watching Seinfeld, though, so he can get his royalties from it to pay for things like this. You do know he was a producer of Seinfeld...right?

18. I had honestly thought this had been swept under the carpet already

And if someone had told me that some Trump appointed judge had dismissed the charges, I wouldn't have blinked an eye. Shows how cynical one can get in these times.

Glad this will be in the spotlight again. I'd like to hear how Bannon defends himself to the public, or even his own followers, on this one.
