Mexican president tells Florida Hispanics: Don't give 'one single vote' to DeSantis
Source: The Hill
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Thursday called on Hispanic people in Florida to vote against Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who launched his 2024 White House bid the day before, because of his immigration policies.
Hopefully Hispanics in Florida will wake up and not give him one single vote, to not vote for those who persecute migrants, those who dont respect migrants, López Obrador said.
López Obradors plea for Florida Hispanics to wake up comes as the states voters, including Latinos, have increasingly swung toward Republicans.
Last year, 58 percent of the states Hispanic voters swung toward DeSantis in his reelection campaign, according to CNN exit poll data analyzed by the Americas Society/Council of the Americas.

(2,138 posts)A quick search finds this statistic. Though it's from 2004, I don't think things have changed all that much... Though I could be wrong.
The plurality (41%) of Latinos in Florida is Cuban, however there are sizeable proportions of Puerto Ricans (18%), Mexicans (17%), and South Americans (13%) in the state as well.

He said when he first moved my people he knew from Cuba were Repugs but he thinks that has changed some over the years. He says now he knows lots of Cuban -Americans who vote Democratic.
Just an observation from one person.

(26,697 posts)... since the ones he's talking to have to be voters and therefore US citizens...
Why would he assume that people who left Mexico to come to the US (or whose parents did) would care what his opinion is?
I'd be worried that it would have the contrary effect.

(58,785 posts)also a large portion of Americans of South American background. And of course, those whites who are also conservative -- especially men! -- tend to vote Republican. Florida's Cubans also average significantly older, something like 40, than other Hispanic Americans, who average pre- middle age 30s range.
But while that explains why FL's "Hispanics" overall, and with them FL's EC votes, went for tRump/Repubs, it leaves all the rest who aren't at all happy about that and worried about what's happening.
Nationally, Mexican background still predominates big of course, and a large, solid majority of them and all the other Hispanic groups except Cuban and S.Am. still vote Democratic. Turnout increased by 30% in 2020, and Hispanics were big in electing Biden.
Cuban and South American backgrounds, though much fewer nationally, still predominate in FL, still vote Republican more, and made that critical difference in throwing FL to Republicans in 2020. GOTV among them was problematic for us.

(26,697 posts)Plenty of reasons to vote against this guy... but this isn't one of them.
I prefer the Newsome/DeSantis feud - where both are trying to keep their citizens from moving to the other state and convince their own to stay put. What kind of executive makes a stink about someone trying to keep his own citizens from leaving?

I guess the answer is "not that many"

It would certainly explain why the Republicans in power in those states as well as those in office at the Federal level are against a good education.

(4,973 posts)After all, the rethug line is one of MANLY men who do MANLY things and are MANLY in appearance. They do NOT truck with any males who have long hair (except the ones who are MANLY) or who wear anything but jeans and cowboy hats. It is no wonder that plenty of Hispanics in this country are falling for that crap. They buy into it.
