DOJ closes Pence classified documents investigation with no charges

Source: NBC News

Former Vice President Mike Pence will not be charged in the discovery of classified documents at his Indiana home, according to a letter obtained by NBC News.

On Thursday, the DOJ’s national security division formally informed Pence’s attorney that it had closed its investigation and that based on the “results” of that probe, no charges will be filed against the former vice president. The department declined to comment, but a DOJ official confirmed that the department had sent the letter.

The timing of the investigation’s ending is a relief to Pence, as he plans to announce his bid for president next week. Special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into former President Donald Trump’s handling of classified documents could also be reaching a decision point on whether any charges will be filed.

A Pence adviser told NBC the former vice president and his team are pleased but not surprised by the investigation’s conclusion.

1. I expect this is how the Biden docs case will end as well

There's a big difference between accidentally misplacing classified documents at the end of your administration then immediately cooperating with the DOJ when you discover your error, versus stealing classified documents you know you shouldn't have, showing them off to people, and then deliberately hiding them from the DOJ.

The former situation ends with a whimper, we shall see how the latter situation pans out...

14. The obvious result, nada, for Pence was more urgent. Needs to announce against his former Master.

In the entire circle of R President. candidates yet to be anointed by ThePress, …assorted monsters, charlatans, attention seekers, or all of the above and more, my vote in primary season goes to Pence.

For one really really good reason and a couple of dicey ones.

that the "closeouts" might also mean a "final" move by Smith is more imminent now. They need to close their Biden one (it's going on 6 months and might actually be completed)...

all waiting for will happen: Trump's indictment. I'm still wondering what they've got on him beyond what we know. It would really be something if they had evidence he gave a document to someone.

6. That's basically what I was thinking

(and posted right above you)

Clear the ancillary "distractions" and now focus on the final pieces.

I keep thinking about the subterfuge that Allan Bragg did in NY about when his indictments were expected to drop and they did drop on a surprise date, when everyone was lead to believe that they would be "in recess" until after Easter when they would resume with attending to other case hearings, and nothing would release regarding the big case.

9. This is what I've been wondering. The drip, drip, drip of Trump info regarding docs

Then this. Wondering if they’re setting the stage for an indictment very soon.

(although it's supposed to go up to the low - mid 90s here and I gotta water some plants and put my herbs in )

I have a feeling there is some "deadline" but that's just a hunch.

As has been posted in other threads, the last time the grand jury handling the classified docs case (for 45) had convened to hear evidence was on May 5 and today is June 2, so...

7. Department of Justice tells Pence it won't seek criminal charges in documents probe
Fri Jun 2, 2023, 11:11 AM
Jun 2023

This is appropriate in that Pence immediately returned the documents.

https://abcnews.go.com/US/department-justice-tells-pence-seek-criminal-charges-documents/story?id=99790563&cid=social_twitter_abcnp

The Department of Justice has notified former Vice President Mike Pence that no criminal charges will be sought in their investigation into his handling of classified documents after leaving office, according to a letter sent to Pence's attorneys by the DOJ that ABC News has reviewed.

A Justice Department spokesperson confirmed the authenticity of the letter to ABC News, but declined to comment further.

The letter from DOJ's National Security Division comes the week before Pence is expected to announce his candidacy for president in 2024.

Earlier this year lawyers for Pence informed the Justice Department that a small number of classified documents had been found at his home in Indiana.

16. On a PR basis, makes sense to exonerate Pence before Biden.

If they exonerated Biden first, there would have been non-stop spewing about how politics is why he wasn't charged. Now, when they exonerate Biden, those bogus arguments will have been obliterated in advance! They'll still bloviate, but their positions will have already been stripped of any authenticity, not that they would have been authentic, anyway.
