Oath Keepers convicted in Jan. 6 Capitol riot get prison in latest extremist sentencings

Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two Florida men who stormed the U.S. Capitol with other members of the far-right Oath Keepers group were sentenced Friday to three years in prison for seditious conspiracy and other charges — the latest in a historic string of sentences in the Jan. 6. 2021 attack.

David Moerschel, 45, a neurophysiologist from Punta Gorda, and Joseph Hackett, a 52-year-old chiropractor from Sarasota, were convicted in January alongside other members of the antigovernment extremist group for their roles in what prosecutors described as a violent plot to stop the transfer power from former President Donald Trump to President Joe Biden after the 2020 election.

Both men were among the lower-level members charged with seditious conspiracy. Moerschel was sentenced to three years in prison and Hackett got three and a half years.

All told, nine people associated with the Oath Keepers have been tried for seditious conspiracy and six were convicted of the rarely used Civil War-era charge in two separate trials, including the group’s founder Stewart Rhodes. Rhodes was sentenced last week to 18 years in prison — a record for a Jan. 6 defendant. Three defendants were cleared of the sedition charge but found guilty of other Jan. 6 crimes.

These are two more: David Moerschel and Joseph Hackett.

The previous two were Roberto Minuta and Edward Vallejo, sentenced Thursday.

...that they only got 3 years. I'd bet if you did a study, you'd find a high percentage of chiropractors to be MAGAts.

1) The idea that they should be grateful for getting ONLY 3 years, or

2) The idea that most chiropractors are likely Trumpers?

I'm guessing you mean #2. But just in case:

1) their compadres are getting longer sentences, and they will probably get time off for good behavior

2) my personal experience. I currently know about 6 different chiropractors and every one of them is a Trumper. Chiros tend to be "on the edge" of a lot of medicine, often practicing rather unorthodox treatments (like pyramid power, lots of herbs of questionable efficacy, etc) and are somewhat scorned by medical doctors and other practitioners. I think this mindset tends towards "outside of the box" thinking, which can sometimes be good, but which leans towards unorthodox "leaders" like Trump. Just my experience, YMMV.

I see a chiropractor now, an AFAIK he’s pretty mainstream. Of course I don’t discuss politics with him, or with most people. But given where he works (deep blue NOVA) I’d be surprised if he was a MAGAt.

A LOT more! Three years? That’s all? Can they put a 1 in front of the 3 and make it thirteen years? That’d be a LOT better and more appropriate.

Chiros and vaccine deniers tend to travel together. They are all based on woo (look up Paltrow) and taking money from gullibles.

Somebody with a label of "neurophysiologist" seems suspect in my mind, but I'll assume there was some actual real science behind that label. Ahhh. I just figgered it out - it's the modern term for "phrenologist" - same quackery.

Is not repentant at all. I don't advocate his being killed for it but the sentence is obviously too light.
