Source: CNN
Lawyers for former President Donald Trump are meeting with Justice Department officials on Monday following a public request for a meeting about what they characterize as prosecutorial misconduct, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The meeting comes as the special counsels investigation into Trumps handling of classified documents and possible obstruction appears to nearing its final stages.
While Trumps team had publicly asked to meet with Attorney General Merrick Garland, he is not believed to be in the meeting.

I *think* that grand jury meets on Thursdays and Fridays.

(3,374 posts)If I have to, this is my deal:
1. Home arrest, cannot go out unsupervised.
2. He signs a deal where he gives up his right to run for any public office.
3. He will not hold rallies for himself or anyone else.
4. TV interviews are out of the question. Books or articles are also out of the question. In other words, he is prohibited from spewing his lies and hate to the country.
5. Twitter and whatever the name of his failed thing is cannot be used for political purposes.
6. He will pay back $250,000,000.00 to the idiots who donated money to him.
7. A bailout fee of $1 billion will be required to keep him out of jail.
8. He will wear, 24/7, am ankle monitor for the rest of his lousy life.
9. He will report to the authorities once a month and if he fails to do so every two weeks and if he misses any, every week, and if he continues to miss any, every day.
10. He will do community service once a week at a homeless place giving food.
11. Sell all his planes and helicopters because his only way to fly must be on commercial airlines accompanied by security, and he will be paying for security personnel's travel expenses.
I can think of many others, but I think this would keep him busy and upset for the rest of his life, plus not hearing from him until the day he departs to hell is good enough.

(15,174 posts)maybe learn a lesson. No give-backs.
Add in no external communications (internet, mail, smoke signals, etc.) without going through a gatekeeper (that would be a horrible job.)

(102,116 posts)It will only feed his BS rhetoric, provide zero deterrence and send the worst message anyone could send in terms of our security. No country would rationally want to share any security data with us. Our CIA and other agents/assets would be sent the message that we can't/won't protect them. Why would any of our own elect to put themselves at risk of being identified by foreign agents tasked with removing our assets and why would they seek to try to convince others to help our side?
This would be the most insane act, DOJ could do.

(11,971 posts)...but, related to other comments here, it seems like it might just be what would happen at this point in the investigation anyway. It's sloppily written. The "according to sources familiar with the matter" part may just refer to the meeting itself, and not to the implication of what prompted it, which may or may not be relevant to the meeting itself.

(7,270 posts)the procedure seems to be rather common practice. And itt matters because falsely implying the significance of an event or rather describing an event as being one thing, when it is a common practice is quite a significant distinction with a difference.
Of course the defendant wants to spin this in a manner he can make political hay, but reporters should not be obliged to frame it that when they know, or should know differently. Reporters on that beat ought to know better, one should think.

(14,616 posts)Trumps lawyers have been trying to meet with doj for weeks.
This ploy may be the one, limited, case where the doj hears them out.
It doesn't mean they will discuss anything substantative. They may just listen and take notes. But they can't just ignore a claim of misconduct.
They will hear it, investigate, and find nothing.

(24,522 posts)so it doesn't appear to be true. I think the only way they will get him to plead guilty is if he is convinced that he faces prison. Don't know if he is that aware or not.

It seems the high level guys get off fairly easy With probation and the loss of their security clearance while the low level people are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law
Is today the day they offer him a plea deal? Who knows

If anything he is adding to the growing stack of charges. DOJ knows where the bodies (docs)
are buried and is about to do a hard squeeze some nuts. (Provided he can find any)

Donald Trump's attorneys met with the Department of Justice to argue against a possible indictment.
The meeting Monday suggested that special counsel Jack Smith had nearly completed his investigation into Trump's mishandling of classified documents, although sources familiar with the probe say the special counsel has broadened his investigation of possible White House involvement in the Jan. 6 insurrection, reported the Wall Street Journal.
Sources told the Post the lawyers aimed "to argue against any indictment of the former president over his handling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort."
Trump lawyers John Rowley, James Trusty and Lindsey Halligan had requested a meeting with attorney general Merrick Garland ahead of a possible indictment, but neither he or deputy attorney general Lisa Monaco had been expected to attend Monday's meeting.
