Washington A federal judge in New York has granted a request from media organizations to make public the identities of three people who signed the bond for Rep. George Santos' release after his indictment, but said their names should remain hidden for now to allow Santos to appeal.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Anne Shields said Tuesday that she granted an order to unseal the identities of the guarantors of Santos' $500,000 bond. However, she directed the clerk of the court to keep her decision and the bond under seal, giving Santos until noon Friday to challenge her ruling.
Defense attorneys for Santos, a Republican from New York, filed a motion under a court-imposed deadline Monday night arguing the court should keep the records under wraps. His defense said the three people who helped provide Santos' bond would be "likely to suffer great distress, may lose their jobs, and God forbid, may suffer physical injury" if their identities were made public.
"There is little doubt that the suretors will suffer some unnecessary form of retaliation if their identities and employment are revealed," Santos' filing said. It closed by saying that Santos "would rather surrender to pretrial detainment than subject these suretors to what will inevitably come."

Judge: No more delays
Judge: Here's the Ruling... for the plaintiffs
Judge: Delay until Friday for defendant response.
I expect Friday there will be a request to "delay" by Santos, until the following Monday.

Let him stay in jail if the truth is that untenable

What's the big deal on who posted the criminal's bail, anyway.
I can't imagine any billionaires being in trouble over this?
What am I missing?
The posting of bond would be considered bribery and undue influence.
Since most bail bondsmen usually charge 10% fee, the posting of that bond is worth $50,000.
If Santos isn't paying it, then it is a gift to him worth that much.

They did not have to put up cash. It was a promise to cover it. And bail is not considered a gift or income by any government agency because its not. And it should not be considered one. In a fair world.

(5,524 posts)Maybe it isn't legally a gift.
But do you think Santos would feel like he owes them a favor?
Has he received something of value (freedom) that would have cost him 50k without the help?
Maybe not legally but this reeks of influence peddling.

(2,166 posts)to know. It's absolutely their right to that information whether or not the bond is still in place. Santo is trying to crate a bartering chip where none exist.

I must ask why anyone who thus assisted Santos could be doing so in any jeopardy at all. He's Kevin's golden boy after all.

(999 posts)It boggles my mind just how far the right will go to hide thier financial backers. Santos defense team is trying to convince the judge that a leftist mob will decend upon the people who posted bail with pitchforks and knives. I am so tired of that trope.
Santos and McCarthy must really be fearful of the backlash they will get once the names are revealed.

(999 posts)Since three put up the bond I am assuming they put all of it up in the form of a cash bond because otherwise the Fed would want some dort of collateral. There may also be restrictions on where that cash bond comes. Should be interesting.

(31,962 posts)It was simply a promise to pay. They apparently have collateral to back up the promise but they did not have to put it up per the court.
