"Occupy" targets banks, corporate campaign spending

ReutersBy Laird Harrison and Lily Kuo | Reuters

Dozens of Occupy protesters chained themselves to doors at Wells Fargo bank headquarters in San Francisco on Friday, while across the United States hundreds more demonstrators rallied at federal courthouses against corporate campaign donations.

Activists in San Francisco aimed to disrupt the city's financial district as part of "Occupy Wall Street West" by targeting 22 bank branches and other financial industry offices.

At least 11 protesters who had chained themselves to a rear entrance to the Wells Fargo headquarters were removed and arrested for trespassing, but police allowed other protesters to remain chained to other doors of the building.

"It's peaceful and many banks have taken steps to mitigate the impact, so it's an ideal situation," said San Francisco Police Commander Richard Corriea. Wells Fargo told many employees to work from home, he said.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Lanny Breuer, head of the Justice Department's criminal division, were partners for years at a Washington law firm that represented a Who's Who of big banks and other companies at the center of alleged foreclosure fraud, a Reuters inquiry shows....

Reuters reported in December that under Holder and Breuer, the Justice Department hasn't brought any criminal cases against big banks or other companies involved in mortgage servicing, even though copious evidence has surfaced of apparent criminal violations in foreclosure cases. The evidence, including records from federal and state courts and local clerks' offices around the country, shows widespread forgery, perjury, obstruction of justice, and illegal foreclosures on the homes of thousands of active-duty military personnel.

Not.

It doesn't matter too much; most of us already realize the 1% controls the government.

That's why we do what we do. To try to make things better for the 99%. To replace cronyism and corruption with democracy and equality.

Facing freezing temperatures and snowy weather, several hundred protesters gathered at courthouses in Chicago and across the nation Friday as they protested a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that removed most limits on corporate and labor spending in federal elections.

Around 50 people braved a driving Chicago snow to lend their voices to the national Occupy the Courts protest of a U.S. Supreme Court decision removing most limits on corporate and labor spending in federal elections.

The placard-carrying demonstrators gathered today in a plaza across from the Dirksen Federal Courthouse, waving at passing cars and chanting, "Money out of politics."

Protesters want a constitutional amendment overturning the ruling known as Citizens United that lets private groups spend on political campaigns with few restrictions.
