Planned Parenthood resumes offering abortions in Wisconsin after more than a year

MADISON, Wis. -- Planned Parenthood resumed offering abortion services in Wisconsin on Monday after halting them for more than a year since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

Providers across the state stopped offering abortions following the June 2022 decision, fearing enforcement of an 1849 state law that appears to ban the procedure but had previously been nullified by the 1973 Roe ruling. A judge ruled last month that the 144-year-old law doesn't apply to medical abortions.

In light of the ruling, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin began offering abortions at clinics in Madison and Milwaukee again on Monday. The group did not say how many abortions it expected to perform but said appointments at its Milwaukee clinic on Monday were completely filled within 24 hours of announcing that services would resume.

Without access to abortion care in Wisconsin for the past 15 months, many patients have sought assistance in neighboring Illinois, where abortions have remained widely available. According to Planned Parenthood of Illinois, its clinics have seen a seven-fold increase in patients from Wisconsin since the Supreme Court overturned Roe.

2. The Dobbs decision has had very little impact on total abortions since women can go to blue

states. Red states are mostly reporting none, even though they would not know about abortions through pills or other means. The Dobbs decision left the choice up to states, but the forced birthers are not satisfied that they have taken away the rights of women in their states, now they want to do the same in blue states. One of their current plans is to bet the FACE Act overturned. FACE stands for Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act. Their plan seems to be to create another fake case for the Supreme Court rule on and overturn the act, which would leave them free to blockade clinics, harass patients, and prevent doctors from even entering the clinics, or worse murder them as has happened in the past.

“For the last 30 years, the Face Act has shielded abortion clinics from the protesters who would love nothing more than to shut them down – and from a movement with a history of resorting to deadly tactics to do so. Now, with Roe v Wade gone, anti-abortion activists have their sights set on the last abortion clinics in the country, and the Face Act is in their crosshairs.

Handy’s case may tee up a constitutional challenge to the Face Act. Earlier this month, the prominent anti-abortion law firm the Thomas More Society said it would use Handy’s case to attempt to abolish the Face Act, which they saw as an irrelevant relic now that the supreme court has overturned Roe.

“There’s a very serious question about whether the federal government has any further interest in the abortion issue, whether there’s any federal interest at stake that has to be protected under federal law,” Martin Cannon, a Thomas More Society lawyer who is representing Handy, told the Washington Examiner.”
