Microsoft announces hiring Sam Altman, creator of ChatGPT

Source: Actual News Magazine.

Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, both co-founders of OpenAI, “will join, with other colleagues, Microsoft to lead a new research team in AI”, wrote Satya Nadella on the X network. OpenAI is the start-up that launched the generative artificial intelligence (AI) platform ChatGPT. The release of the first version of this tool online, on November 30, 2022, kicked off a race in this area.

“The mission continues”, reacted Sam Altman, 38 years old, on. Microsoft has invested several billion dollars in OpenAI and has integrated the technology into its own products, such as the Bing search engine.

The OpenAI board of directors created a surprise on Friday by announcing the dismissal with immediate effect of the Silicon Valley star following “a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he had not always been candid in his communications with the board, hindering his ability to fulfill his responsibilities”. Several managers of the company founded at the end of 2015 have since announced their resignations, in particular the chairman of the board of directors, Greg Brockman.

Basically Altman and some top ChatGPT researchers are leaving the (nominally) nonprofit OpenAI to join Microsoft. Open AI's mission statement is : "Our mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence—AI systems that are generally smarter than humans—benefits all of humanity." Microsoft and "benefits all of humanity" does not compute. Bad news.

I opened my workstation to find a preview of Copilot (a Microsoft enterprise infused with Bing Chat) had been embedded in my taskbar. It’s putting up some resistance to being deleted, so there goes time rooting out what I consider an intruder.

If copilot is not respecting your privacy settings, places like the EU that have effective data privacy protection laws will figure that out and force Microsoft to comply.

Advanced ai is interesting stuff. I use the edge version a lot now for answering tech questions, as it is vastly superior to google search.

According to Edge and a linked Cnet article from 2019, it's $1 billion. According to Google and a linked NPR article from today, it's $13 billion.

We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners. We look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI's new leadership team and working with them. And we’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success.

firing of Altman to begin with.

Meanwhile Microsoft is likely to subsume the openai dev team as the chaos convinces many to move with Altman. A huge win for Microsoft in a critical technology. Reminiscent of when they basically acquired DEC’s entire advanced OS dev team, resulting in Windows NT.
