US Says Iran Preparing to Hit Israel With Ballistic Missiles

The US has indications that Iran is preparing to launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel in the next 12 hours, according to a senior White House official.

The US is actively supporting preparations to defend Israel against the possible strike, which would carry severe consequences for Iran, said the official, who asked not to be identified. Israeli state-run Kan News reported that preparations are being made for a “wide scale” Iranian attack on security facilities, which may also damage civilian targets.

The warning comes after Israeli forces moved into southern Lebanon in an escalation of its campaign against Tehran-backed Hezbollah. An Israeli military spokesman said that the country was prepared for both defensive and offensive operations. Iran’s foreign minister didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Any strike by Iran would be its second direct attack on Israel in almost six months. The first in April did minimal damage, partly because it was telegraphed in advance and involved slower moving missiles and drones, helping the Israeli air force shoot down the vast majority of projectiles with help from the US, UK, France and Jordan. Under pressure from the US, Israel’s response was limited to a strike on an Iranian airbase.

Any strike by Iran would be its second direct attack on Israel in almost six months. In April, it launched hundreds of drones and missiles. Most of the those were destroyed by air defense systems deployed by Israel, US and UK alongside other allies. Israel responded to the attack in a more limited manner and neither side extended the hostilities further.

The warning comes after Israeli forces moved into southern Lebanon in an escalation of its campaign against Tehran-backed Hezbollah.

Troops began what Israel said were "targeted ground raids" shortly before midnight local time alongside airstrikes in Beirut's southern suburbs, and the army later reported "intense fighting." Hezbollah fired a salvo of rockets in response and millions of Israelis moved to shelters, the Israel Defense Forces has said.

Joe Biden is in a sense at this time a stay-at-home president, he can deal with these crises during election season without being overtly on the hot seat and not take time off from campaigning.

his forte has been "foreign affairs" and he has been doing it for a long long long long time.

Given what we have heard about him over the years, i wouldn't want to be in the Oval office or Situation Room right now because of whatever expletives he might be hurling.

and there is some validity to their justification, based on UN resolutions, the destruction of Hezbollah does put Iran in the hot seat. To not respond as their prize pawn is dismantled shows weakness, but there isn't really any upside to attacking Israel. The odds of success are low and if the strike fizzles like Iran's last attack it will show they are impotent.

about the Arak nuclear facility. It is in western Iran, very much within reach of Israel.

Back when, I participated in a war gamed attack to destroy the facility. It is very well defended, but not invincible. Also, F-35s were not yet available when it was gamed out.

Kharg Island's oil terminals are soft target that would hit Iran where it hurts.

And a major attack could cripple Iran for a decade.

The main protection it has is the threat of international condemnation over possible environmental damage to the Gulf and from Iranian oil consumers. Since Israel shows a very high DGAF tolerance to international opinion, that protection is thin. If Israel really wants to take out Kharg Island the US is the only one who could talk them out of it and that conversation will not be on the evening news.

Something the Israelis can defend against effectively and not trigger a massive counter-attack.

If the Iranians decide to go all-in, they are going to get pasted by a combined Israeli/US response.

more a show of resistance than any effort to cause serious damage. Avoid a large retaliation if successful or embarrassment if it fails.

I do not see the US participating, except defensively, unless Iran were to use NBC weapons or cause major damage to Jerusalem, Tel Aviv or Haifa

After the Israelis killed the Hamas official, they vowed revenge, and have yet to respond, which suggests to me they know they aren't well positioned for a hot conflict with Israel and possibly the US. They may feel the need to show the flag, but I can't see them taking action that invites a full scale response. There's no positive outcome for them in that.

And Israel has it's missle defense systems ready.

It's probably going to be like the last attack from Iran, where all sorts of missle/drone attacks were attempted, with little damage as a result.

Fueling up ballistic missiles and setting up mobile launchers all telegraph what they're going to do regardless if they want to or not.

Yes I'm surely Iranians were hoping no damage was done LOL
