Mexico refuses to accept a U.S. deportation flight

Mexico refuses to accept a U.S. deportation flight

The Mexican government has criticized President Donald Trump's unilateral immigration actions, and the landing would have required Mexico's assistance.

Jan. 24, 2025, 5:01 PM EST
By Courtney Kube and Jonathan Allen

WASHINGTON -- Mexico denied a U.S. military plane access to land Thursday, at least temporarily frustrating the Trump administration's plans to deport immigrants to the country, according to two U.S. defense officials and a third person familiar with the situation.

Two Guatemala-bound Air Force C-17s, carrying about 80 people apiece, flew deportees out of the U.S. Thursday night, the sources said. The third flight, slotted for Mexico, never took off.

A White House spokesperson did not reply to a text message seeking comment on Mexico's stance.

Mexico and it's people have a history of celebrating the small victories. I understand your point and concern. Anything that can gum up the works is a good thing. By not being able to transport, space will become limited, if space is limited, arrests must become selective. WE DON'T WANT THE PROCESS TO OPERATE SMOOTHLY.

games. Not so sure the detainees will benefit but go ahead and take the 'little win'

Additionally, with the tariff threat the US has significant leverage over Mexico (and Canada) as both of them are much smaller economies significantly more dependent on the USA than the USA is on them. It is not that the USA will not suffer in a trade war. It is that Mexico/Canada will suffer 10X.

and just accept the losses as they come. So much for resistance. At the mention of 100s of acres offered are we to assume those facilities are up and running? The circumstances of the detainees are absolutely unfortunate and inhumane and I wouldn't dare to guess their thoughts at this time. What I do know is nobody should acquiesce to Diaper Don, Rat Face Miller or anybody else in that administration based on their threats. That's how bullies win.
"Project 2025" is meant to scare people into compliance. They're counting on weakness, low morale and fear, to control the masses. Perfect examples, Putin, Orban and Hitler.
Yeah, I'll take any wins we can get. It's better than the alternative. BTW, we includes anybody against this administration.
As for the tariffs, sure, Mexico and Canada will feel pain, unnecessarily I might add, but the pain American consumers will feel will be self inflicted and will bear reflection in the stock market. What a bunch of dopes.

concentration camps will not make Republicans and their supporters stew in their own juice. They will get funds to run private prisons for the people they round up and will hire MAGAs as guards. MAGA companies will get government contracts to provide food, water, and other necessities, but the prisoners will receive half of what they actually need after the contractors skim off the top.

Mexico will not be hurt by refusing to accept the deportees. The US fascists will not be hurt by keeping people imprisoned in the US. The people in the prisons will be hurt. Some will die.

But this is all about cruelty and show.

Military crews have had no qualms on slaughtering weddings in Afghanistan from helicopter and drones. Audio recordings show that they fully knew they were targeting civilians, but laughed through the slaughter. Nothing happened to them.

I’m ex-military. The same types of people are in there as in the civilian world. However, there probably are a greater percentage of bullies and psychopaths than in the civilian population, because those aren’t necessarily seen as bad qualities. Many of the “normal” people will just go with the flow. Yes, they’ll still be culpable and many will suffer mentally, but that will be of small comfort to those dead.

Snips:

The military mobilization, perhaps the most dramatic of Trump's border-related steps, involves 1,000 Army soldiers and 500 Marines who officials said are headed for El Paso and San Diego, Calif.

Acting Secretary of Defense Robert Salesses said the deployment would include Air Force planes to deport migrants, as well as helicopters, flight crews and intelligence analysts to support increased detection and monitoring efforts along the border. It will be overseen by the Colorado-based Northern Command, which is responsible for defending the U.S. homeland.

UH-72 Lakota helicopters began flying this week along the border in support of CBP operations, the official said. The Pentagon's U.S. Transportation Command was positioning a total of four aircraft in El Paso and San Diego: two C-17 Globemaster III cargo planes and a pair of C-130 Hercules transports, which can carry troops, equipment and supplies. Drones are also being deployed.

Deportations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement soared to a 10-year high in fiscal year 2024 under the Biden administration, surpassing the Trump-era high recorded in 2019, according to a government report released Thursday.

ICE deported more than 271,000 unauthorized immigrants in fiscal year 2024, the highest tally recorded by the agency since fiscal year 2014, when the Obama administration carried out 316,000 deportations. In fiscal year 2019, ICE reported 267,000 deportations, the peak under the Trump administration. Fiscal years start in October and end in September.
