Warren: Frank Would Be ‘Extraordinary’ In Interim Senate Post

PEMA LEVY 4:33 PM EST, MONDAY JANUARY 7, 2013
Freshman Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) praised ex-Rep. Barney Frank, who has asked to temporarily fill Sen. John Kerry's seat until a special election is held in June, saying he would be an "extraordinary" senator, the Boston Herald reports.
At a celebration of her own ascension to the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts Saturday, Warren praised Frank has "my tutor, my guide" and a "champion" of consumer protection.
Congressman Frank understands the workings of financial markets in ways that are unmatched, she said to reporters after the event. If he is appointed to be a senator, I have no doubt he will be extraordinary.
Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D), who was on stage with Warren at the event, has yet to appoint an interim senator.

(6,787 posts)Being a Pennsylvanian, I speak from a vast fund of ignorance in Massachusetts politics..and from what I know of him, Ed Markey is a splendid guy....but Barney Frank seems like such an obvious high profile choice for this appointment that I'm left wondering if there's some sort internecine battle going on up there among Massachusetts Dems. (And I'd like to thank DU for giving me an opportunity to use the word "internecine."

Markey is going to run in the special election, so Patrick will not have Markey on his short list for the temporary appointment.
Markey will only have a couple of months to raise money and to campaign for the democratic primary and special election, he will need all the time that he can find to do that - so he really wouldn't have time to focus on senate business even if he were to be temporarily appointed.
Barney Frank does not want to run in the special election and has volunteered to be the interim senator for the few months that the seat needs to be filled before the special election is held because of all the financial issues/spending cuts that will be debated in the senate in the next few months.

(14,013 posts)from recent reporting on the mishegas of our Governor and the interim appointment:
" Frank) is egotistical. Hes irascible. He would love to do this and make other members of the delegation squirm especially U.S. Rep. Edward Markey, Kerrys aspiring replacement. Frank blames Markey for a redistricting formula that gave Frank a supposedly tougher district to win, and allegedly led to his decision to retire. Taking the spotlight from Markey or from other would-be senators such as U.S. Reps. Michael Capuano or Steve Lynch would bring a sly smile to Franks often cranky visage."
