Poachers kill 11 elephants in Kenya

Source: Irish Times

Poachers killed a family of 11 elephants in the biggest single mass shooting of the animals on record in Kenya, wildlife officials said today.

A gang of about 10 attackers hacked off the elephants' tusks in Tsavo East National Park on Saturday, officials said - the latest sign of a resurgence of mostly Asian demand for ivory jewellery and ornaments.

&quot It) shows the great lengths these criminal cartels are ready to go to get ivory. It's really tragic," Kenya Wildlife Service spokesman Paul Udo told Reuters via Twitter.

He said it was the worst single incident of its kind recorded in the East African country. Elephant poaching in Kenya declined sharply after 1989 when the government banned trade in ivory.

former poachers in Kenya are now being paid to protect the elephants. The poachers themselves don't earn all that much for the ivory.

May they get the retribution they richly deserve. I feel so sorry for those poor elephants who had to suffer like that.

They need to do everything possible to defend these animals. Even introduce a death sentence for anybody found guilty of shooting them.

Who mourn their dead like we do. This is like hearing of a mass shooting in America to us this will effect other elephants in the area as well. SAD!!

many people here staunchly oppose deadly force in instances of human victims, but once an animal is involved, go for it! Overwhelming consensus for government sanctioned murder! It's almost as if people are using emotion rather than logic. Humans are funny like that eh?

Since the human population continues expanding, I expect - as I have predicted for many years - that most of the megafauna will become extinct. Tigers and Rhinoes are probably going to disappear, sadly.
