The student was arrested and suspended. No word on why the student brought the weapons to school.

6. Alabama isn't exactly known for its high level of intelligence.

I believe it consistently ranks near the bottom in how kids perform in school. As well as ranking near the top in how much aid it takes from the government despite the fact so many of their politicians complain about government largess and welfare.

Omitting DC (not a state), it ranks 5th putting it in the top 10 percent!

Commenting on the hypocrisy of that state's elected officials is fair (though I fail to see the relevance here). Painting the whole state as low intelligence is not. This kid could have been planning something very bad. Or he could have been a bully target who became desperate and felt he needed something to defend himself. He could have been a kid terrified by fears of mass shootings and bought into the NRA rhetoric that more "good guys" with guns would keep his school safe. We just don't know anything yet.

Where the hell were this kids parents and why did they not know this was a possibility. A thirteen year old kid doesn't have access to a gun unless their parent gives that access.

Part of it would involve making sure people who own guns:

A) Don't have any mental illnesses that make them a danger to self or others

B) Keep them locked up and unavailable to their children unless directly suprevised

C) Take training classes themselves

D) Kids who use guns in hunting or target scenarios have to pass a test and have a permit just like with cars.

People who don't insure their guns can have them confiscated and returned only once they have met the criteria.

Responsible gun ownership isn't the problem.

People thinking the 2nd amendment means they can take their guns everywhere with them and that their kids are smart enough to handle deadly weapons in a rational manner even before they know the truth about Santa and the Easter Bunny.

They get tired of apple ornaments, you know. A little semi-automatic once in a while would be welcome.
