New form of cocaine possibly being made in Colombia .
Wednesday, 16 January 2013 10:45 Rob Edmond

"Pink cocaine" -- a synthetic form of cocaine first made in Holland, is now being made in Colombia, local media reported on Wednesday.

According to Colombia’s La W radio, the drug it is not yet recognized as a heavily trafficked drug yet there is evidence to suggest that it is being produced in Colombia.

Officially known as H2CB, "pink cocaine" is a dream for narcotics smugglers as it is much easier to conceal, as it is usually held in prescription drug capsules. The drug can also reportedly dilute discreetly into liquids.

Users can be expected to pay around $50,000 for one kilogram which is more than the going rate for standard cocaine, making this drug increasingly attractive to traffickers.

If this stuff really is pink, stepping on it with typical white cuts (like baby laxative) will make it a lot whiter. Sounds like a hard sell.

to maintain the pinkness, but I suppose there wouldn't be too many repeat customers.

1. This stuff is described as "synthetic cocaine," so it's not "a new form of cocaine" at all, it's a synthetic drug.

2. Any powdery substance can be put in prescription pill capsules, including real cocaine, which can also be diluted in liquids, so this stuff is not easier to conceal or a "dream for narcotics smugglers."

3. I would be greatly surprised if Colombia, where they have real cocaine labs, is producing ersatz cocaine. I dunno, maybe there'sa bored chemist somewhere down there, but it seems unlikely.

More likely, H2CB is just another new synthetic drug, like the "bath salts" drugs, some of which have cocaine-like effects. Perhaps some Colombian party animals brought some back with them from Europe.

Chances are, this is just a new process for the purification and concentration of coca extract. Sounds like someone may have scaled-up the Scott Test for cocaine into a purification procedure. If so, that pink color is due to cobalt salts. Mmmmmm yummy.

Over the last nine years, Colombia has seen a 58% drop in the amount of land used to cultivate drugs. Our efforts have been focused on law enforcement, eradication and developing alternative crops for rural farmers. Ending the scourge of drugs has been a top priority for the Colombian government, but it can neither be accomplished in a few short years nor without the continued support of the United States through Plan Colombia.
