House to vote to continue federal pay freeze
January 16, 2013 | Modified: January 16, 2013 at 3:45 pm
WASHINGTON (AP) The House next week will take up a Republican bill to overturn an order from President Barack Obama giving federal workers a 0.5 percent pay raise.
The legislation would continue a pay freeze for the federal government's 2 million employees that has been in effect for the past two years.
Republicans say that stopping the pay increase from going into effect when the current federal spending bill ends on March 27 would save taxpayers $11 billion over 10 years.
Obama on Dec. 27 issued an executive order extending the raise to all federal employees, including members of Congress. As part of the deal to prevent the government from going over the so-called fiscal cliff, Congress reversed the part of that order giving its own members a $900-per-year raise.

As a government worker I like it when taxpayers want to cut your salary and demand more services.

(2,730 posts)Congress wouldn't miss a pay raise, especially Issa who is worth millions of Dollars and gets increases from his own personal investments like Mitt Romney. So this is easy for someone like him to say. The military also includes Federal employees. Those Troops need a raise.

(5,023 posts)Such raises do not keep up with inflation which is over 3%, so employees effectively get paid less every year. That must be a bargain for employers who charge more for their products every year. I'm not a good enough economist to understand how prices can go up and wages go down -- who gets the difference? I haven't had a raise in 3 years, and if this continues, in 20 years it will be like I'm working for half the money as when I started.

can rack up record profits on late fees and poor credit scores from the hapless consumers.
