State Police: All 26 Newtown victims shot with assault rifle

Lt. J. Paul Vance, the face of an ongoing Connecticut State Police investigation into worst grade school shooting in U.S. history, on Thursday debunked media and Internet reports that Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza killed his victims with handguns and not the Bushmaster XM-15 rifle that is now the focus of a proposed federal assault weapons ban.

All 26 of Lanza's victims were shot with the .223 caliber semi-automatic rifle, said Vance, who bristled at claims to the contrary during an interview with Hearst Connecticut Newspapers.
"It's all these conspiracy theorists that are trying to mucky up the waters," said Vance, the longtime state police spokesman.

Multiple Second Amendment and gun owner websites have attempted to cast doubts on whether the Bushmaster XM-15, a type of AR-15 rifle that is currently legal, was used in the Dec. 14 carnage by Lanza.

Some have cited a Dec. 15 "Today" show video clip from the day after the shooting, in which NBC News Justice Department correspondent Pete Williams said that four handguns were recovered inside Sandy Hook Elementary School and that the Bushmaster rifle was found in the trunk of a car owned by Lanza's slain mother, Nancy Lanza.

Assault rifles are already illegal as machine guns.

We need to reign these in, of course, but let's not forget about the numerically greater danger of handguns.

the best rifles the military has are arguably bolt action sniper rifles, not the 'scary looking' carbines. one navy seal (Chris Kyle) has 225 confirmed kills using mostly a .300 win mag bolt action sniper rifle.

and the deadliest single soldier in history got over 505 confirmed kills in under 100 days...using a BOLT ACTION rifle.

moves forward with more reasonable limitations on the filibuster and pass them with his 51 votes.

Regardless of what happens in the Senate, the House is almost certain to block any meaningful gun control legislation because they sleep with their guns and their gun manufacturer paymasters.

Even if they succeed in reinstating the "ban on assault rifles"...that just bans people from buying them from a dealer. Personal sales are still legal (although market price skyrockets), and you get to keep what you already own pre-ban. You really think they are going to try to go around collecting the millions of rifles scattered around the country? De-arming a society is not easy. Just look at what happened when Japan tried to ban swords. Spoiler alert...lot's of people still have swords.

I'm totally fine with a ban on sales (I'm already grandfathered in), but you shouldn't go around spewing nonsense and angering all the crazy armed people out there. The south is seriously a powder keg right now, and feeding crazy people's delusions of the gubment's comin fer mah gunz with your own delusions of the government is coming for their guns doesn't help anybody.

15. Actually, it was not designed for that

I own the Bushmaster XM-15. It is a great and reliable rifle. But if we democratically decide that I shouldn't be able to own it, I'm perfectly willing to give it up if compensated at fair market value so I can get a good bolt action hunting rifle.

Now, this rifle (which is a 5.56 rifle, not .223 - they are not equivalent...you'd think a reporter could look up this easily available information) is designed to work well at 50 - 100 yards, and succeeds very well at that. I have never seen anyone with a carbine sighted in at less than 50 yards. I seriously doubt anyone at any of these school massacres were shot at that range. My guess is most victims were shot at 5 to 15 yards, at which range a semi-automatic pistol is much more dangerous. The iron sights on a rifle are actually pretty difficult to learn how to use for rapidly acquiring multiple close targets. That's why LEOs that are most likely to engage at short ranges are equipped with pistols and shotguns. Some LEOs like the border patrol are issued a pistol with no safety because they are most likely to engage at distances of even less than 10 yards. At that range, someone could charge and stab you with a knife faster than it takes to draw, remove the safety, acquire the target and fire (Mythbusters confirmed it...ha!). With a rifle it takes even longer. The rifles and carbines are left for SWAT teams and such (the average range for a police sniper is 50 - 60 yards).

A semi-automatic pistol is much faster to shoot, faster to reload, and more accurate with multiple rapidly acquired targets at close range for all but the most highly trained shooters. In the hands of a trained shooter, a pistol is devastating at close range: watch video below of a guy hitting 3 targets at close range with 18 pistol rounds in less than 5 seconds.

I agree that ANY firearm is deadly. But they are each designed to be relatively more deadly in specific circumstances, and shotguns/pistols are the most deadly in the circumstances that this massacre occurred. Shooting into a movie theater full of people is a different story.

But you can keep being afraid of things that look scary, instead of the bigger threat of the guns you can't see until it is too late.
