Radio ad features David Clarke encouraging gun ownership
MILWAUKEE A Wisconsin sheriff is urging citizens to learn to handle firearms -- so they can defend themselves until authorities arrive.
Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. released the radio ad this week telling residents that when it comes to personal safety: "I need you in the game."
In the ad, Clarke said that calling 911 alone and waiting for officers to arrive may not be enough due to layoffs and furloughs.
He said in the ad that citizens can either beg for mercy, hide or "fight back."

(1,378 posts)Sheriff Clark does have a huge Republican following in the rest of the State, because he is a very outspoken "Crime and Punishment" official. But obviously the people of Milwaukee County like that, because he gets reelected.

(7 posts)I remeber hearing about citys in CA that were going bankrupt and laying off police officers. The only thing people had to rely on were themselves. Technically, the police don't have a legal obligation to protect you as an individual, only society as a whole. If you call 911 and you are injured because the police were too busy or they went to the wrong address you can't sue them.

(60,010 posts)In the county I live in, there still are very very few home invasions, because people have dogs and guns.
You would almost have to know your victim personally and determine there was no gun.
Otherwise it is a given that there are guns around.
Mostly rifles and shotguns, since hunting is a huge deal around here.

(13,877 posts)over the horrendous odds of an in-home/domestic/suicidal gun accident any day. The statistics on suicide or death by family dog is pretty low. Many people who don't have alarm systems still post the front yard notice. I used to have a big sign on my back yard gate ... "Beware: Big, Hungry Dog patrols this back yard." Actually, it was a couple of cats who could run any other cat out with a couple of shrieking war meows. To my knowledge, in almost 20 years, it was never tested.

I assume they are living in mud hovels without electricity, and no one in the whole county even has a job. Banks don't bother opening branches there, there are no stores or indeed any businesses.

(14,807 posts)position of the Law (way high up the chain and in the position to know for many reasons) that the conservatives goal was to bring the Country to the point where outcomes were determined by basically "gun fights", like the old West. Eight years have passed since I was told this and I have witnessed this look more and more like the absolute truth. IS this really what the NRA hopes for? Then they truly will make tons of money.

(16,038 posts)take an hour or more for the police to arrive..it could take 30 minutes to get them to my house..then it's likely to be one officer. No, most people in places like this consider their own security in one way or another..mostly by arming themselves and keeping dogs.

(1,378 posts)Not sure what you are talking about, but there was talk that he might run for County Executive last cycle, but he decided against it.
He is a Democrat (on paper anyway), and last year probably would have been his best shot but he says he wants to continue to be Sheriff, and he keeps getting reelected, so...............................

(16,191 posts)And for the same reason. The county kept cutting his budget, so he publicly said that he could no longer guarantee the ability of his department to respond to crimes and recommended that people buy guns. Then he went even FURTHER and opened up his CCW policy. Stanislaus County is effectively "shall issue" at this point, so long as you have a clean criminal history and list "personal safety" as your reason for requesting it.
This has been a concern for other counties for a few years now, as CCW's are valid statewide. It's all but impossible for a resident of LA or San Francisco to get a CCW, but there's nothing stopping someone from Modesto from walking around either of those cities with a legal concealed firearm, using the CCW issued by their home county. As you might imagine, there are LOTS of LEO's in neighboring counties who are less than thrilled by the sheriff's decision.
I live in a rural area in Oregon, and everyone I know owns numerous guns. I dont know of anyone who has had a home invasion. I have always been against the practice of all governments to tax people, then send the taxes to the general fund. They then use the taxes for numerous projects and expenditures, but when there is a shortfall, they say they cant fund the basic things the populous needs, then they cut police and fire but keep the other less needed services.
I suggest an idea that the first thing to be cut in any budget shortfall, is the last thing implemented until you get down to the police and fire services which would be the last to go. From here you go to volunteer fire fighters and police. This is only fair and equitable, and common sense. America was built without professional fire and police and took care of their own, and it was the industrial revolution that sent most people into the cities. Maybe it's time to reverse the process.

They stated:
"...live in a rural area in Oregon, and everyone I know owns numerous guns. I dont know of anyone who has had a home invasion."
and
"...until you get down to the police and fire services which would be the last to go."
From the replies...you'all are saying that the "home invasion" statement is wrong? All of you know people who have had many
home invasions? Gee, I never hear about any on the news...I guess...point?
AND
Police and Fire Services would be last to go, during budget cutting processes...you disagree? You want them cut, first????
Sorry folks, I didn't see anything trollish about these two parts of the post.

(13,877 posts)is going to drive his pickup truck or van 30-40 miles to chance to burglarize a rural home...unless s/he knows no one is home or has some indication that there are moveable, pawnable or quickly saleable items that will make it worth the heist...at which point an owner's gun does no good. And those that do happen are often "inside jobs". That's what home security systems are for. Leaving aside the emotional subject of guns or weapons, especially if a home is not known to house said weapons, not likely to happen.
It's kind of like trick-or-treating...excuse the reference...but best to go where the pickings are good. Usually, in urban/suburban areas, someone has left open a car door or a back door. Twice I had burglaries...once was when my car was inadvertently left unlocked...thief got a couple of bucks from change in the ash tray...and the other time my son's school pack was left in his truck, in sight, and a shoddy lock got easily busted or more likely, he left it unlocked. There wasn't a true break-in in the suburban neighborhood for years...unless something was left unlocked.
Second the "industrial revolution" reference...for ill or for good...comes with the demographics.
