Snyder asks Mich. Supreme Court to decide right-to-work's constitutionality
By Chad Livengood
Detroit News Lansing Bureau
Lansing Gov. Rick Snyder on Monday asked the Michigan Supreme Court to consider the constitutionality of the new public sector right-to-work law and whether it applies to Michigan's 35,000 unionized state workers.
In a letter to Chief Justice Robert Young Jr., Snyder asked the high court to decide whether Public 349 of 2012 interferes with the Michigan Civil Service Commission's ability to negotiate union contracts.
Snyder also asked Young to have the court consider whether the law violates the 14th Amendment equal protection clause of the United State constitution "because the legislation does not apply to all employees in public or private sector bargaining units."
The public right-to-work law exempts the Michigan State Police and unionized police and firefighters because they are governed by Public Act 312, which gives them special binding arbitration rights.

A smart lawyer never asks a question to which he doesn't know the answer.
Rick Snyder has a law degree from a top-10 law school.
Former Supreme Court Justice Diane Hathaway, a Democrat, resigned in disgrace last week.
So, ... who didn't see this one coming?
It's like asking a 7-year-old if he/she likes candy!

Going to take years to fix this state if at all possible.

(813 posts)The far right here demonized Jennifer Granholm. She wasn't perfect, but after John Engler dismantled social services, including closing most state hospitals...she was handed a shovel full of bullshit and when she couldn't magically make it smell good, the fickle electorate went chasing after the Republicans.
Michigan is odd politically. Sure, we're a "blue state." However, get outside of Detroit and other major industrial areas and you'll find as many Tea Party/right-wing/militia kooks as anywhere else. We just have more woods for them to hide in.

(2,730 posts)you elects your President, you should throw him out of office. You should throw all those cronies out. Why should the majority of the people in Michigan accept anything from a tyrannical Government? Just what are the minorities in rural districts going to do about it if urban areas don't accept this tyranny? They will do nothing but accept the will of the majority. Those people in rural districts go to work and sell their products in urban areas. Michigan cannot exist without the urban areas of the state. People in urban areas donot understand their real power. For any government to exist, it has to be accepted by the will of it's people they govern. This constant exists in every country. The Tea Party/right-wing/militia kooks are emperors with no cloths if those in Detroit and Industrial areas ban them from their areas. The majority of state revenues also comes from those urban areas. The word for it is rebellion. And the state of West Virginia use to be part of Virginia until plantation owners with slaves started to act like tyrants. Detroit can set their own rules and elect their own government. Just what will Synder do, send in the state militia?

(813 posts)...is what he calls himself.
One almighty bullshitter is what he should call himself.
He said he wasn't interested in the core "wedge" issues that Republicans push for...but then he goes and pushes right-to-work through the (compliant) Legislature.

(813 posts)The Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan has often talked about separating from Michigan and forming a new state called "Superior."
I wouldn't blame them. Yoopers are quite distinct from us downstate "trolls."
