Sarkozy announces French financial transaction tax

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has announced plans to introduce a tax on financial transactions.

The 0.1% levy will be introduced in August regardless of whether other European countries follow suit.

The tax is part of a package of measures set out by the president to promote growth and create jobs.

>

"What we want to do is create a shockwave and set an example that there is absolutely no reason why those who helped bring about the crisis shouldn't pay to restore the finances," he said.

There is actually a thread up claiming the the US is a center left country. Hard to believe people on DU accept that.

As for the tax, it's a great idea. But .1%

rather than what it is now, gambling. Computer driven trading makes markets unresponsive to the needs of people. A little tax solves that problem.

All those 65 years-young he robbed 2 years off of their pension.

I bet the Socialists will propose a 1.0% tax (and decriminalize cannabis and tax it).

With derivatives especially. I certainly hope that this putrid man goes down to defeat, but hopefully not to be replaced by something even worse, which the Socialists are more than capable of.

I hope that 'plans to introduce' actually become a reality, and that it's not watered down or completely derailed.
