Republicans back gay marriage ahead of vote in RI

Source: AP

PROVIDENCE, R.I. The five Republicans in the Rhode Island Senate are backing gay marriage as a legislative committee prepares for a pivotal vote on the issue.

The Senate Republican Caucus announced Tuesday that its members will support legislation allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry. The senators cite their support for liberty and limited government and say same-sex couples deserve the same marriage rights as anyone.

While the GOP caucus only holds five of the Senate's 38 seats, its support is another indication of the growing support for gay marriage in Rhode Island, now the only New England state that doesn't allow gay marriage.

The bill has already passed the House and the Senate Judiciary Committee will decide Tuesday whether to forward the measure to the full Senate for a debate.

1. Every Repuke has gotten the marching orders on this issue

The Dems will no longer be able to use it in 2014.

3. A matter of self-preservation

I don't think they got marching orders. I think they just read the writing on the wall. There was someone on NPR a couple of weeks ago that said the shift in opinion in favor of gay marriage was the fastest social change in the history of polling. People realize it's no big deal and the Republicans have finally given their head a shake and come to the conclusion they would waste their efforts fighting this losing battle. Don't worry...they still have Social Security and Medicare firmly in their sights and can be attacked on that in 2014.

4. Showing my age here...

...but I imagine this verse came to the minds of others, as well.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.
