Bryant: Education mediocre because of moms in the workplace

Source: Clarion-Ledger

In a Washington Post Live event focused on the importance of developing reading skills in children, Gov. Phil Bryant (R) said America’s educational troubles began when mothers began working.

In responding to a question about how American education became “so mediocre,” Bryant said, “I think both parents started working. The mom got in the workplace.”

According to the Washington Post, Bryant acknowledged his remark as controversial, and expanded the answerto say that “both parents are so pressured” in American families.

Also on the panel with Bryant was Delaware Gov. Jack Markell (D) and New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez (R).

Ladies and Gentlemen, the clueless governor of the "great" state of Mississippi!!

Did it ever occur to him that in many instances, mothers work out of necessity? Must be nice to be governor and have the luxury of providing for your family without your wife working. Here's a thought: why not promote job and wage growth in the workplace so it becomes unnecessary for women to work to help support the families. Often one salary no longer cuts it.

I am so tired of these lazy ass men telling me whatever 'failure of the week' I was to my children. Kiss my ass, you Mississippi anti-birth, misogynistic bastard.

They make it nearly impossible to form unions. Repug courts allow companies to get out of their contracts and not pay the workers the pensions that were agreed to and let them get out of providing healthcare for retirees too. Government puts policies in place that reward companies for moving jobs overseas, government devalues teachers and education. All these things really hurt average income and make it necessary for most women to work outside the home. Oh yeah, Repugs also passed laws that women only get to stay home and care for their children on welfare for 2 years. So yeah, they want women to stay at home, be poor as dirt, can't feed the family and can't get food stamps, yet punish them for staying at home at the same time. Basically, they want an under-educated, poverty stricken work force that's too dumb to complain about the working conditions or wages.

but first we have a couple of hurdles to overcome.

First - we need to make marriage legal for ALL Americans, regardless of orientation. Strengthening the institution of marriage for some will strengthen it for all.

Second - support and strengthen Unions so more people can earn a living wage.

Third - raise the minimum wage to at least $21.00, adjusted for regional differences in more expensive areas (see above).

Fourth - erase the gender wage gap (the good Gov may not want to hear this, but some fathers are better suited to stay home than some mothers - give families the choice that makes the most sense for THEM.)

Fifth - Support and strengthen family planning (i.e. birth control and reproductive choice). That way families will have fewer children that they aren't financially well positioned to support on one income.

Sixth - make health care affordable and accessible to all - more than one person I know works simply for the health insurance. I suggest a national plan similar Canada's, but I'm sure the Gov has some good and productive suggestions for this, right?

Seventh - make college affordable. I believe there is a value in education beyond the wage you can earn after graduation. However, if I am burdened by excessive debt upon graduation, not working is foolish at best and in most cases impossible.

That's my short list off the top of my head. I'm sure the Gov will get working on it right away. My husband is looking forward to submitting his resignation as soon as the above issues are addressed.

Thanks for thinking of us!

have better educational results. Poor school performance is more directly related to high poverty rates than to any other factor. IF the GOP cared about education al outcomes; they would champion an Alternative Minimum INCOME, instead of TAX.

How about if education is mediocre it's because the fucking republicans have been tearing down the public school system fore the past thirty years. As soon as the teacher's union got strong and bargained for a decent wage and working We should outlaw all private and charter schools and all home schools.

Because some moms went to work would not affect the whole school system nor would changing some teachers. The only thing that would affect an entire school system or multiple school systems would be management or legislative decisions.

What an incredibly hypocritical fuckwad.

I didn't think things could get worse in Mississippi than Haley Barbour but Phil Bryant has proved me very, very wrong.
