Stridently anti-LGBT candidate announces run for Bachmann seat
By Stephen C. Webster
Thursday, June 6, 2013 15:34 EDT

A former Minnesota state representative who made a name for himself in 2010 with his stridently anti-gay views announced on Wednesday that he intends to run for the seat currently held by retiring Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN).

“It seems like every day we hear about another out-of-control Washington, D.C. power grab,” the failed former businessman told attendees at his campaign announcement event Thursday, according to Politico. “We are going to focus on a message of reforming Washington and improving the lives of everyday people.”

Former Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) sought the Minnesota governor’s office in 2010 and quickly attracted controversy for his ties to the “hard rock ministry” youth group You Can Run But You Cannot Hide International, run by a tea party activist who once called killing LGBT people “moral.” He’s also adamantly in favor of a constitutional amendment to ban same sex marriage equality, and falsely claimed just last month that Minnesota’s marriage equality law would somehow “discriminate” against heterosexual couples.

Once that story broke on MSNBC’s “Rachel Maddow Show,” big box retailer Target actually apologized to its customers for supporting a business PAC that donated to Emmer, after a boycott began putting pressure on the company.

And I hope the national party endorses this guy. And I further hope that he continues to flap his gums about teh gays, along with any other lunacy in his addled brain. He should invoke Jesus, too.

Yup! That'll do it.

2. IDK. That should play beautifully in Bachmann's district. The Democrat already withdrew.

Got some minds in that district who are against the future. I feel bad for DUers living there.

go back in, although Bachmann had so much baggage to run against, that last contest with Jim Graves was very tight. I doubt he'll be as vulnerable to charges of being Batshit Bachmann Crazy.

From the last time he ran:

Tea Party favorite Michele Bachmann wins tight race in Minnesota

This guy is likely Teabagger. But her district kept on re-electing Bachmann for certain qualities unknowable to us at DU.

If he's not an Islamophobe, not believing Obama's the anti-Christ and that ruckus, but just anti-gay, he might not meet their very high standards.

We don't need another bagger in Congress, but with the media spin and the ratfucking, there is a chance of 2014 being 2010 if people don't think long term.

It's possible those who didn't care then, don't care now about the issues Democrats do. That they were not affected by state personhood laws, voter ID, cuts to the safety net and destroying the public sector and unions.

They are satisfied with the GOP status quo being served up, as they never speak against them, only Democrats. So who knows what the people in the Sixth will want to have done?

Do they want Tea Party II as promised by the Koch brothers and Grover Nordquist?

Does the Sixth district want to see things run as they are in Wisconsin, Florida, Virginia, North Dakota, Texas, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Utah, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arizona and Michigan?

Since I don't live there, IDK. All I've heard is that Al Franken's re-election seems to be assured. It's hard to find resources to run candidates against Koch cronies, and even with the money, if the demographics still match what put Bachmann in office, there is no amount of funding will work.

I'm sorry if I sound pesimistic. I'm a long ways from there and don't know what's up, honestly. Maybe you can clue me in!

Apparently it's too much effort to even pretend to be different anymore. Ugh.
