BREAKING: Philadelphia Building Trades Union Alerted Inspections Office to Center City’s Dangers

When the awful story of yesterdays fatal Philadelphia building collapse broke, our first inclination was to find out who the contractor was and how they could be so careless. Video subsequently surfaced of the company, Griffin- Campbell, doing a less than bang up job at a previous demolition last weekend adding fuel to the fire of outcry over their ineptitude.
Now, it has come to the attention of CBS in Philadelphia that union construction organizations alerted the citys Licenses & Inspection office to the potential dangers of the Center City demolition:
Following a deadly building collapse in Center City, Pat Gillespie, the head of the Philadelphia Building and Construction Trades Council, told WPHTs Dom Giordano that the unions alerted L&I about the building before it fell.
[The building] brought in this contractor
whos non-union. I do know that a carpenter working across the street
had gone over and warned people, Look, this isnt going to work, Gillespie said, referring to the way the building demolition was being handled.

(22,143 posts)Nutter is a right wing asshole regardless of the D behind his name and he hates unions, mine in particular.
This contractor is a carpetbagging scab operation that had no business taking this job. This is what you get when you cut corners and go cheap.
This didn't have to happen.

There are reasons that union workers cost more. Doing the job right usually requires skilled labor with strong knowledge and respect for safety procedures.

And yet, the American people still vote for the creeps who hires these scabbies.

(24,010 posts)All U.S. voting systems are electronic and run on 'TRADE SECRET' code--code that the public is not permitted to review. Half the states do NO AUDIT AT ALL (audit = automatic comparison of ballots to electronic totals) because they have NO BALLOT and not even a paper receipt that the voter verifies. The other half do only a miserably inadequate 1% audit. Experts whom I respect say that 10% is the minimum audit required to detect fraud in an electronic system.
Furthermore, 75% of these voting systems are now controlled by one, private, far rightwing connected corporation (ES&S, which bought out Diebold).
Office holders in half the states in the country CANNOT prove that they were actually elected, and office holders in the other half haven't proven it and don't seem to care that they haven't.
The voting system is not just broken, it is gone--dead, privatized, kaput.
You wonder why we have all these assholes running things? THAT'S why. Blame the American people for being asleep on the job when this 'TRADE SECRET' voting machine coup d'etat took place, but don't blame them for voting for assholes until you can prove that they did.

(6,785 posts)I thought about posting it in Religion since it's evidence of divine guidance. Nothing short of a miracle kept that trackhoe operator from killing that helper.
Had I been over that job I'd have been so pissed off I'd have been firing random passerby.
no barriers, no scaffolding, and that operator can't possibly see wtf he is doing.

(17,600 posts)Sure, everyone on the demo operation was negligent, and there should be criminal charges (not just for the equipment operator), but what about the operators of the thrift store? If so many people are saying that whole operation looked unsafe, why the hell would you make your employees work next door?
