10 women, many in 90s, escape burning Calif. limo

Source: AP

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (AP) — Ten elderly women escaped unharmed when the limousine they were in burst into flames while idling in Northern California, authorities and a passenger said.

The Sunday morning fire in Walnut Creek came a little more than a month after five nurses were killed while trapped inside a burning limousine on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge.

Fire crews were called to a gated community in Walnut Creek around 11:35 a.m. Sunday for a vehicle fire. They quickly put out the burning 2009 Lincoln Town Car, a dispatcher told the Contra Costa Times (http://bit.ly/ZERU0q ).

Many of the women were in their 90s. They were apparently headed to Sonoma to celebrate a friend's 96th birthday.

Some people made it out but several died.

That would be so awful.

The one the 5 nurses died in was a 1999 model, but a quick scan shows the problem also exists in the 2000 model.

4. Idling vs. moving over a long bridge/ plus the knowledge of the earlier fire all helped.

This happened in a large retirement community and several of the women were attendants whose quick thinking helped get even the frailest of the women out of the car quickly.

They all got to the party too.

Being sharp and over 100 is no big deal these days....and more people will be over 100 as days go by and even more so in the future as years and decades go by......But an awful thought, that bad also comes with the good, in that Dick Cheney & his like...the compassionate-less republicans the greedy hateful soul-less creatures that they are may be around another thirty years or so as Cheney buys more organs & body parts for himself to stay alive - all from his ill-gotten gains & money by his lies that he still continues to spew to this day, He like most republican born without a conscience, nor kindness....Cheney prposely selfish lies that thousands of young American soldiers died, along with the killing of hundreds of thousands of people in Iraq and elsewhere in the world as Cheney got rich off of Halliburton no bid contracts.....What a fucking disturbing awful nightmare.....Dick Cheney around for another 30 years or more.

But cheers to the women in the limo who kept their wits about them!
