Home News Local News 60 arrested in sixth Moral Monday rally at General Assembly

Source: News & Record (AP)

RALEIGH – About 60 people were arrested Monday in the Legislative Building during an NAACP-sponsored protest against the GOP-led legislature and policies of Republican Gov. Pat McCrory.
The arrests came during the sixth Moral Monday rally at the General Assembly.

Before the arrests, more than 1,400 people demonstrated at the Halifax Mall behind the Legislative Building, holding hands, singing religious songs and praying.

The demonstrators included clergy members, union members and teachers.
The demonstration followed a 26-stop tour across North Carolina last week during which NAACP officials drummed up public support for Monday’s rally. The demonstrators protested against the repeal of the Racial Justice Act, tax reform, proposed cuts to public education and the ending of unemployment benefits to about 70,000 state residents.

After that demonstration, several dozen protesters gathered in front of the entrance to the N.C. Senate chambers. They stood there for 30 minutes singing hymns and praying before Jeff Weaver, the chief of General Assembly police, asked them to leave the Senate entrance.
“This is an unlawful assembly,” Weaver said. “I am asking you to disperse. You have five minutes to leave or you will be arrested.”

There are some similarities with WI, but the NC folks say, "This ain't Wisconsin"!

Hayes, Maddow or Melissa Harris Perry to do an in-depth comparison of North Carolina and Wisconsin.

Melissa is following it:

---------------
No NC ain't Wisconsin but they are both ALEC-targeted battleground states where there is a major tug-of-war going on. NC has to deal with it NC-style. I think that's happening.

I hope the rest of the country will support NC in this struggle like they support Wisconsin. It all matters in the end.

8. The voices of the people are becoming clearer. Something 'mean, arrogant and wrong' is going on, but

the media isn't concerned the rights of the people being disenfranchised so they are not doing the work protected by the Constitution.

McCrory's complaint is without merit. Sadly, because of my age, my first thought was 'The news will not report this nationally until he calls out the fire hoses and dogs on these people.'

I see the different ages and diversity of people being arrested. The legislature did back off on some things, I thought. It may require voting them out of office as they are deaf tombstones.

peaceful, but persistent.

That is the way to go. Let it build naturally all the way to Election Day 2014 and beyond.

12. The protestors were peaceful and polite in the sixties, too. They beat them up anyway.

But you can be peaceful without giving the oppressor any peace, until they relent. A one to one changing of hearts may help. Stay, strong.

I would hope they can't get away with that 60's brutality anymore. The protestors are taking great pains to stay within every letter of the law. They just have to be persistent--keep on em like molasses (or ticks). Keep em under a microscope.

What this is --is a vigil. We Who Object must be continually present and vigilant.

They are ramming the most regressive policies in the nation through on voice votes. They haven't backed off at all.
