Wildlife officials see no signs of hunter boycott in Colorado

DENVER - Colorado wildlife officials say despite threats that hunters planned to boycott Colorado because of new gun control laws, big game applications are up.

So far this year, big game applications have increased by 18,000 over the number in 2012. Colorado Parks and Wildlife processed 469,000 applications this spring, compared with 451,000 applications submitted in 2012.

In March, Michael Bane, a producer for The Outdoor Channel, announced he would no longer film his four shows in Colorado. Hunting outfitters said other people also cancelled trips.

Again, the lesson: the expected "backlash" against Colorado's gun safety legislation is more people -- including hunters -- wanting to visit a saner Colorado.

2. There is a difference

Most hunters are not the same kind of moron that wants to stock pile assault weapons and hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammo. The NRA has lost a lot of hunters over the years because of their radical approach to allow just about anyone to own a gun. The hunters I know do not own assault weapons, and they would never use such a weapon when they hunt.

As stated in another post here there is a big difference between responsible hunters and the gun nuts who simply go out and blow away things for whatever reason with their assault weapons.

It's no coincidence that practically all of DU's hard-core Gun Enthusiasts---the assault rifle/multiple 30-round magazines/100,000 rounds of ammo in a bunker crowd---think hunting and hunters are worthy of nothing but ridicule. The term they use is "Fudd."

Colorado already limits loaded ammunition while hunting (IIRC to 5 rounds, but don't quote me on that) and they aren't worried about passing a background check.

NRA wharrgarrbling notwithstanding, responsible hunters aren't idiots, and weren't going to ruin their vacation for someone else's problems.

3. There are a lot more responsible hunters than the few gun-nuts who do plink/poach everything.

Wish the good hunters would stand up more for things like steel shot and ask for lead bans and higher fines for poachers.

smokers threatened to boycott bars and restaurants when the ban was instated. sucks because now there are no more bars or restaurants to be found anywhere in the state thanks to their efforts.
