George Zimmerman trial: 40 potential jurors identified, jury selection moves to next phase

Source: WFTS, ABC, SP

Zimmerman, 29, is pleading not guilty to second degree murder in the February 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
Zimmerman claims he shot the teen in self defense.

At the start of the seventh day of jury selection, attorneys had asked 32 potential jurors to return for further questioning. They eventually must narrow the pool to six jurors and four alternates.

In 1970, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution does not require that a jury be made up of 12 people; six would do just fine. For cases other than capital offenses, Arizona allows an eight-member jury and Florida allows six. In a 1978 Georgia case, however, the Supreme Court said a jury of five was cutting it too close.
