You can't appreciate the complexity and black humor unless you watch the complete series. I loved where the FBI created this elaborate plan to break into Tony's house and bug a desk lamp he kept in his basement where he thought he was safe to meet with other mob members. Before the FBI has any opportunity to listen in, Tony's daughter confiscates the lamp to furnish her dorm room. LOL!

Wow - he was a terrific actor and stellar as Tony Soprano. My husband and I even watch the reruns, the show was that good.

I hope some of my fellow DUers bombard CNN about that asshat John King who keeps mispronouncing his name, calling Mr. Gandolfini "James Gandolfino". Does that incompetent dolt ever get anything right? It is really disrespectful to mispronounce the man's name when announcing his death.

Freaking inept twit...

RIP Mr. Gandolfini. You were the best.

I agree...CNN is absolutely, totally clueless...Piers Morgan Live is showing footage from The Sopranos of Tony's panic attacks, which mimicked heart attacks.

Insensitive, boorish, uncalled for....add your adjective here.

RIP, Mr. Gandolfini. You deserve much, much better than the "tribute" CNN is paying you.

I am a Kubrick nut, but that movie was just a mistake. He knew it too and said Tom and Nicole had ruined his movie! 2001, Clockwork, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, all masterpieces and he's up there with the greatest filmmakers of all time.

Edie Falco is a miracle in that scene. And James Gandolfini was born to play Tony. I've watched the whole series more than a few times as we have the whole set, and while some shows might miss the mark, as a whole it is the best thing I've ever seen on television. The fourth season of The Wire is next. Too bad HBO was taken over by a couple of marketing suits who have no idea how to make a great show like Chris Albrecht, who unfortunately has a lot of personal problems but knew genius and gave them free reign to make something great. I haven't had a chance to check out Starz to see what he's up to. Too busy watching BBC shows if I ever watch anything at all.

I almost can't believe Tony is gone. They were talking at one point of making some movies. How sad, he was so young. RIP

I went through a divorce 25 years ago, and Gandolfini's and Falco's acting captured all the anger and rage and hurt of that experience in a way that still leaves me shaking when I watch it. Those two pulled the emotions from a very deep place and I've never seen more outstanding acting in anything, anywhere.

An autopsy will determine if it's genetic, if it's related to cholesterol or blockage, if it's caused by his obesity, or if he had one of those "torn in two" arteries like what killed (not fat) John Ritter.

I was just thinking that they kind of left it open and was hoping for more Sopranos or maybe even a movie. I was thinking with some good writing, they might bring it back with maybe his son or even his daughter taking the reigns! Not a chance without "T" calling the shots behind the scenes.

No, I never met him (James G) . Yes, I watched every single episode of The Sopranos and knew he was portraying a ruthless "businessman". But damn - if he didn't make me laugh and actually root for him.

Yes, I'm a bad person. But it takes a special talent for an actor to make a mob leader appealing, and he did. After all, remember what he did to Ralphie after finding out what happened to Pie-O-My.

James was no dummy. Rutgers graduate. I'm sad.

Jun 2013
(CNN) -- James Gandolfini, best known for his role as an anxiety-ridden mob boss on HBO's "The Sopranos," died in Italy, possibly of a heart attack, an HBO spokeswoman and the actor's managers said Wednesday. He was 51.
Gandolfini was on holiday in Rome, said Mara Mikialian, HBO's vice president for program publicity.
The actor was scheduled to make an appearance at the Taormina Film Fest in Sicily this week, according to the festival.
Gandolfini won three Emmy Awards for his portrayal of Tony Soprano, the angst-ridden mob boss who visited a therapist and took Prozac while knocking off people. "The Sopranos" aired from 1999 to 2007.
