WASHINGTON -- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) came to the American Enterprise Institute on Friday to give a speech on the First Amendment, but the most memorable moment was his awkward exchange with Norm Ornstein, a centrist political pundit who has apparently irked McConnell over the years.
Ornstein, also an AEI scholar and congressional expert, was among those who rose to ask McConnell a question after his speech. As soon as he identified himself, McConnell let him have it.
"I've enjoyed dueling you, Norm, over the years. You've been consistently wrong on almost everything," McConnell said to laughs. "I've always wondered, you know, who eats lunch with you over here?"

(32,018 posts)I think the HuffPo used "smears senate historian" to get the click-click-click traffic despite front page & article page not same title.

(5,044 posts)I typically do not post in LBN all that often, but I thought the story was important as Mcconell is up for reelection next year. Thank you for the explanation rather than straight criticism. I genuinely did not know.

(16,984 posts)Before Ornstein could ask his question, McConnell just had to mock him before the audience -- who dutifully laughed.
By the way, some of the questions were humdingers -- references to the National Organization for Marriage, Star Wars and stun guns (but not all in the same question).

(54,358 posts)Norm is a personal friend, if not an especially close one.
But he is as about as centrist as you can possibly get. However, he despises gross intellectual stupidity, and so much of that is coming from the right these days, he seems like a flaming leftist in their eyes when he calls them on their bullshit. It's not Norm's fault that they are spewing out so much of it these days.
