Man-made particles lowered hurricane frequency: study

Source: AFP

PARIS (AFP) - Higher levels of air pollution reduced the frequency of North Atlantic hurricanes and other tropical storms for most of the 20th century, a study said Sunday.

Adding to evidence for mankind's impact on the weather system, the probe found a link between these powerful storms and aerosols, the scientific term for specks of matter suspended in a gas.

Aerosols can occur in natural form -- as dusty volcanic plumes, clouds or fog -- but are also man-made, such as sooty particles from burning coal or oil.

The study focused on particles from North America and Europe that were generated mainly from burning fossil fuels. Researchers from the UK Met Office created weather simulations covering the period 1860 to 2050.

Since optimal looting conditions require natural disasters and/or riots, these manly particles must be stopped at once!

So next time a hurricane is coming, break out the hairspray, and use it on your hair FIRST, then spray the rest toward the hurricane. Lets just forget about warmer temps making it easier for hurricanes to occur.

But after reading it through I saw that aerosols in the atmosphere prior to the banning of many of the chemicals involved tended to dampen hurricanes. The particulates blocked sunlight over the oceans and reduced the development of them. THEN you read in the article that after the 1980's ban that hurricanes began ticking up. THEN you read that global warming might not increase the number of hurricanes but WILL increase the fury.
It was a little hard putting all the discordant paragraphs into a readable and understandable package. But it sure did, at first blush, seem like pollution was a good thing didn't?

was the connection between those and weather problems they were causing off the coast of West Africa i.e. Europe was screwing Africa.

That's the way FOX "News" will report it.

If you want a plot that seems really complicated but is very easy to understand, read an Agatha Christie murder. You can spot the bad guys early on, and then there is nothing to do but enjoy the unraveling of the evil.

Science is much more complex. I know that even though I don't really understand science at all. But that seems really clear to me.

When they finish studying all the factors and entering all the data, then we will know what to expect. Until then, there is always something new to consider.

I can only say that the June Gloom we normally have in Los Angeles, has not cooled down the area as much as it usually does. I don't know whether my internal thermometer just feels the heat more or whether it really has been warmer than most Junes. Today was pleasant, but we have had more hot ones than we normally do in my opinion. It may depend on what part of Los Angeles you are located. I firmly believe that this area of the country is getting warmer and the last three years have been demonstrably drier than average.

Or any number of storms which combined with rising sea temps cause damage beyond the scope of strength or frequency of the storm.

More dangerous data that may or may not be backed by peer review. Just now found another Forbes op-ed manipulating via headlines not backed up by op-ed, or totally misrepresenting peer review science.

So much to fight at every turn.

It's unfortunate that we built much of our coastal developments during a time of artificially lowered storm activity. It appears our belief in understanding coastal developments was based upon false views of what the "normal" weather should be. Unfortunately this means many people will see their homes destroyed as we return to truly normal weather frequency.
