Oakland schools cop sues over shooting

Oakland Unified School District officials coerced a police sergeant to lie about an incident in which his partner shot and killed a man outside a school dance, the sergeant alleged in a federal civil rights lawsuit filed Wednesday.
Sgt. Jonathan Bellusa said the district, which runs its own police force, retaliated against him after he accused another officer of fatally shooting Raheim Brown, 20, in 2011 after Brown was already incapacitated and posed no threat.
The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Oakland, also claims that Bellusa was a target of officials for complaining about racist remarks that had been made by the former schools police chief.
Bellusa, at a news conference Wednesday, acknowledged that he was taking an unusual position in suing the district and officials who have credited the other officer, Sgt. Barhin Bhatt, with saving Bellusa's life.
