Jim DeMint: Women want to be forced to have ultrasounds

Source: Raw Story

Some women like being forced to have an ultrasound before receiving an abortion, according to former Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC).

Republicans in state legislatures across the country have pushed legislation that requires women to undergo an ultrasound procedure 24 hours before terminating their pregnancy. The so-called “informed consent” laws usually require women to be given a picture of the fetus and be shown a fetal heartbeat, along with general information about abortion.

“The more the ultrasounds have become part of the law, where a woman gets the opportunity to see that there’s a real child, it’s beginning to change minds, and I think that’s a good thing,” DeMint said on NBC’s Meet the Press. “It’s time that the 3,000 babies we lose every day have some people speaking up for them.”

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow pointed out that women weren’t given the opportunity to have an ultrasound, they were forced to have a medically unnecessary ultrasound by the state. She added that in many cases women were subjected to trans-vaginal ultrasounds.

There you go, little ladies, we know what's best for you.

'Just close your eyes and think of... Liberty? Freedom? Privacy rights?'

No fourth amendment for you, sweetie.

The Fourth Amendment (Amendment IV) to the United States Constitution is the part of the Bill of Rights which guards against unreasonable searches and seizures, along with requiring any warrant to be judicially sanctioned and supported by probable cause. It was adopted as a response to the abuse of the writ of assistance, which is a type of general search warrant, in the American Revolution. Search and seizure (including arrest) should be limited in scope according to specific information supplied to the issuing court, usually by a law enforcement officer, who has sworn by it. The Fourth Amendment applies to the states by way of the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Paul Ryan has promised the GOP will repeal the Fourteenth Amendment with its clauses for Equal Protection under the law, Birthright Citizenship and Due Process when they get enough red states, through state conventions. It's on a video thread posted at DU.

I call it a 'clear and present danger' to life and liberty of well, uh, women, since it's apparent in the 'hands on' fascism enacted state by state by the GOP, that females need the Fourth and Fourteenth Amedments. Strangely enough, there doesn't seem to be much concern about how they apply to women.

My advice to Bible thumpers who are in that same camp, and I can thump with the best of them:

Racist? Sexist? Homophobe? Prejudiced against people because of where they were born, what religion they were reared or not, what political party or anything else?

Did not your God create the races and all the shades thereof? Did not your God create the sexes, and all the variations thereof? Did not your God create he Earth and all the countries of the world? Did not your God create the human mind and heart, and all the infinite kinds of thinking and feeling?

And did not your God declare that the works of His hands were good? Who do you think you are talking to when you spout your hate and attack your equals? Your argument is with God, don't bring it to me.

I suggest you take up with your God, for your argument is with the work of His hands and His choices for what body and place the human spirit would dwell. Don't come to me with your insanity. Stop your blasphemy against the Lord who made all equal.

For we are all created equal under God, no one has not sinned (been separated from God) and is not under judgment.

I could rant on with a few other things, but you get my drift. DeMint would have been ill advised to spew his hatred of God's creation in front of me. This is how these characters need to be told to get their feet back on Earth with rest of us!

Republicans are all on message about how we need to change our laws to comport with God's Law, never mind the 1st Amendment that prohibits the establishment of a government sanctioned religion. God's Law trumps the Constitution in the mind of Republicans. And the Supreme Court is beginning to sanction this notion -- watch the outcome of the Hobby Lobby challenge to provisions in the Affordable Care Act based on religious beliefs. Why doesn't the Republican Party simply drop the pretense and rename themselves the Bible or God's Law Party because that is what they are today. And with the Supreme Court stacked with Catholic's, what is to stop them.

As an alternative, of course. See how many take him up on his offer. Far better than just banning this or that and letting the marketplace sort things out.

I'd allocate him the funds to make it work. Hell, I'd raise taxes to support the effort.

Capitalism, baby.

Or baby capitalism.

Or something like that.

Of course, he'd never agree to paying for anything. Perhaps its better to leave it alone and make sure abortion remains legal and readily available.

Still.....wouldn't it be interesting to see THEM propose a realistic market driven agenda for reducing abortion?

I figured it was just a normal part of the procedure. Maybe it was.

Was the pre-abortion ultrasound considered prudent from a medical point of view? I don't know. But that's far cry from republican males coming into the examining room and demanding that you LOOK AT IT YOU MURDERING BITCH.

Back when I had the abortion, we couldn't see anything but a tiny dot on the ultrasound screen because it was so early. And I will say this to pro-lifers who may read this: I did not weep and bond with the dot.

Also, the ultrasound I had was done on the same day as a part of the abortion procedure. If it's a medically necessary, that's when you do it. Making a woman have an ultrasound, then leave, and come back 24 hours later, is another story.

A very SICK story.

Mon Jul 1, 2013, 11:53 PM
Jul 2013
Peter Carmel and Bruce Malone: The TT Interview

by Emily Ramshaw and Thanh Tan
January 31, 2012

FYI: Peter Carmel is one the left, and the president of the AMA (American Medical Association) and Bruce Malone is on the right and the president of the TMA (Texas Medical Association). They both answer the TT (Texas Tribune) interviewer's questions regarding the sonogram law in Texas and the attack on Planned Parenthood:

Carmel: It is a needless, dangerous interference with the practice of medicine by politicians. And as physicians, we have to oppose all interference that we possibly can by politicians in the practice of medicine. There are all sorts of rules all over the country, with state legislatures trying to dictate what doctors do. In the state of Florida, it is illegal for a doctor to ask the family of a child whether there are guns in the home. You can ask about storage of chemicals, about fire alarms, fire escapes, open windows, how the windows are sealed. You’re allowed to ask all those questions, but you cannot ask whether there are firearms in the home. Firearms are a major cause of childhood mortality and injury. It’s so extreme as to be ludicrous. The important principle is, the government shouldn’t interfere with the doctor-patient relationship. The government shouldn’t practice medicine.

TT: And what about Texas lawmakers’ efforts to slash spending on family planning? Now they’re threatening not to participate in the Medicaid Women’s Health Program if they can’t exclude Planned Parenthood.

Malone: That would be a really stupid thing to do. Planned Parenthood does not do abortions in the state of Texas with state funds. So this is a very stupid political thing. It’s not like the state of Texas has another safety net for these women for medical care. The Texas Medical Association doesn’t want to get into the issue of whether a patient wants an elective abortion. That’s not what we’re dealing with. We’re talking about well woman services, pap smears and breast exams, things that make public health sense. And we don’t want to see those women who are vulnerable denied essential medical services because someone wants to debate an ethics issue. That’s their right to debate that. That’s fine, but these are essential medical services.

Carmel: What it sets up is two classes of patients. If you’ve got rocks, you’ve got the ability, you’ve got access to contraception, to women’s health, to all of these things. If you’re poor, we’re going to deny you access to that kind of health. That’s first of all not tolerable for medicine, and it can’t be tolerable for Americans. No American would say, "Yes, the poor should get inferior treatment."

http://www.texastribune.org/texas-special-interest-groups/texas-medical-association/dr-peter-carmel-and-dr-bruce-malone-tt-interview/

They covered every point that a progressive would make. Whether they've been run out of town since the interview, I don't know. But they were well-informed and acting like rational human beings.

Texas has always had a strong progressive streak and citizens there have just been overwhelmed by an all out attack on sanity, IMO. I found that article by going through what I thought was for women's rights, but realized it was a pro-life apologists story, the first that showed up under my search terms:

https://liveaction.org/blog/ultrasound-law-is-dangerous-according-to-the-american-medical-association/

The home page shows it's a radical blog:

http://www.liveaction.org/

The contention in the articles show that it smears women chastising them for being callous, or acting like someone telling them what to do that rich people don't have to ask permission for, like DeMint's bull.

I don't know if TRMS went into the real issue, that this is for oppressing and creating chaos in the lives of poor and middle class women, as rich women have never had any problem getting a pregnancy terminated. If nothing else, they would fly to another area or country in the past.

These lawmakers know that the target group can't do that. The last paragraph in the TT article shows that the doctors know what is going on with this, and dispute it in some of the strongest terms I've heard yet.

Naturally, the Live Action Blog wants to paint the doctors as wanting to make money off the procedure and protecting a lucrative business, which is a myth. Much more money is made in prenatal, birthing and pediatric care.

What it would be good to know is who is funding Live Action Blog? We can see that she is right wing darling and is no doubt paid for here appearances and interviews, and enjoying non-profit status as group, most likely has filed to not pay taxes as well.

I smell Koch/ALEC money. I'm not buying the cover story. This is an organizing tool of the religious rights and political all the way.

Thanks for leading me to research that.

Cool as it might be to give birth to a velociraptor, 99 and 44-100th percent of all women who go to doctors to get abortions know they're pregnant with human fetuses. (Jim DeMint's mom, OTOH, was part of the 56/100 percentage of women who give birth to velociraptors or something.)

Before you freak out, why would MY ultrasound be anymore disgusting as the one he suggests?

Fuck the little son of a bitch.

And his little dog, too.

On edit: sorry about the dog comment...pooches should NEVER be associated with WTF their owners do.

Anyway, fuck DeMint and the goddamned horse he rode in on.....wait, don't blame the fucking horse, either.

Ok. How about just FUCK DEMINT.??

Ok: third edit. Sorry about the fucking comment about 'man on dog's' mother... But in all fairness, you shoulda schooled your little shit somewhat better and I'm sorry about the expletive. And, by the way, fuck your stupid useless piece of shit son.

I honestly believe thats' the thought process behind these laws and why the GOP remains so blind even to the PR debacle they create when they do this.

I mean there are anti abortion conservative women out there. Not a lot but theyd o exist in enough numbers for window dressing. And the GOP still doesnt' have enough sense to do even that.

where a woman gets the opportunity to see that there’s a real child

Basically DeMint is not only lying about the bill, he's also painting women as so abysmally stupid that they don't understand what being pregnant means unless a device is shoved up their genitals first.

Rachel corrected his lies, but Gregory tossed it to Ralph Reed.

They'll lie about anything, with no repercussions. 'Woman gets the opportunity'. Typical lying 'christian' repug pig.

They're 'against intrusive big government', except for TV ultrasounds. They're against 'big gov take over of medical care', except when they're taking over womens' medical care. Their one-time presidential front runner Santorum proclaimed his opposition to ALL pre-natal care, because it was a 'gateway to abortion', but he stayed mum about THIS pre-natal procedure.

Sadly, his demons rot away at all that is kind, decent and intelligent within the reach of his voice.
