Edward Snowden Was No Coward To Flee U.S., Pentagon Papers Lawyer Says

Source: Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- National Security Agency whistle-blower Edward Snowden has been slammed by some as a “coward” for refusing to turn himself in to U.S. authorities and face espionage charges for shedding light on secret surveillance programs. But one of the lawyers involved in the Vietnam-era Pentagon Papers case has said that Snowden was justified in seeking sanctuary in Russia.

In a Friday interview on "The Agenda" on SiriusXM Progress, Daniel Sheehan said that Snowden wouldn’t receive a fair trial if he returned to the U.S.

“No American citizen in their right mind would trust the honesty and the objectivity of the American judicial system at this time in history,” Sheehan said. “They are not trustworthy. The majority of the United States Supreme Court is not trustworthy. They have given themselves over to this same national security state mentality.”

Russia has granted Snowden temporary asylum for one year. Earlier this month, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) called Russia's actions a betrayal. The senator went on to label Snowden a "coward."

Sheehan is woefully behind the curve, almost quaint and obsolete, one might say.

Google Daniel Sheehan + Christic Institute + La Penca bombing to learn what type of man Daniel Sheehan is. The guy was pretty much alone going after the Iran-Contra bastards.

Unlike many here even on DU who thinks he should have turned himself in.

That's insane.

Sorry but this isn't the country that it used to be. There is no way in hell Snowden would get a fair trial. There is no way in hell that the government wouldn't violate his constitutional rights. This government and judicial system can no longer be trusted. They don't respect the constitution.

None of them would have reported anything at all in Snowden's position. They're just mad that someone shed some daylight on how Bushco is still in charge.

The only ones calling him a "coward" are shills for the military-surveillance-banking industrial cartel. Moreover, CIA Whistleblower Susan Lindauer DID stay here which resulted in her being the first American indicted under the Patriot Act and subsequently denounced as crazy:

"I requested to testify through proper channels. I was a whistleblower, but I did it through Congress -- I TRIED to do it through Congress. And a lot of whistleblowers are citing my case as evidence that going through the proper channels is not going to work and is not going to protect the public or the whistleblower. It makes no difference: if the government feels threatened they will attack you, even if you're doing everything right. So why not make sure that the public has the information?

Edward Snowden appears to be a tipping point, and I consider that to be very valuable. A lot of what Edward Snowden has revealed is already known to those of us inside the intelligence community, but it's not known by the wider public. And he has forced this issue into the public domain where ordinary Americans are now confronting the EXTREME surveillance that's going on. But I can tell you that for several years, within a 10-mile radius of every home in the United States, in the most isolated rural areas there is someone listening to your phone calls and reading your emails. And we've known this for a long time."
